Coordinator Carousel: Conference USA Coaching Changes

Monday, May 19th, 2008

While head coaches get most of the glory, a good coordinator can single-handedly morph a unit from sub par to successful given the right coaching strategies. Drew Howard and the guys at College Gridiron Boss continue with the Conference USA.

Houston

Offensive Coordinator
Out: Randy Clements and Phillip Montgomery. Clements and Montgomery followed Art Briles to Baylor.

In: Jason Phillips. Phillips was the wide receivers coach this past year for Houston’s high powered offense. Houston hopes that this promotion will help keep their offensive momentum intact. Coordinator Carousel: Big 12 Coaching Changes

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Mangino! While head coaches get most of the glory, a good coordinator can single -handedly morph a unit from sub par to successful given the right coaching strategies. Drew Howard and the guys at College Gridiron Boss begin their travels in the Big 12 conference.

Nebraska: Defensive Coordinator
Out: Kevin Cosgrove . About time.

In: Carl Pelini. Carl Pelini, who was a former coach under Frank Solich , comes back to Nebraska after a stint as defensive line coach with Ohio. Carl is the brother of new head coach Bo Pelini , and the Husker faithful can rest assured that Bo will keep his hands in the defense as much as possible. Carl more than likely wouldn’t be coaching this defense if it weren’t for the family relationship.

Oklahoma: Offensive Coordinator
Out: Kevin Sumlin . Sumlin takes over as head coach at Houston for the departed Art Briles .

In: Jay Norvell . Norvell comes back to the Big 12 after a short stint at UCLA. Before then he was the offensive coordinator for Bill Callahan at Nebraska. With the exception of his 2006 campaign in Lincoln, his 4 seasons as an offensive coordinator at Nebraska and UCLA have not been overly productive.

Oklahoma State: Offensive Coordinator
Out: Larry Fedora. Fedora was hired as the new head coach at Southern Miss.

In: Trooper Taylor… Read the rest of this entry →

Whacked by the Draft: Arkansas and Kentucky must rebuild

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Daniel Freer of Fantasy College Blitz breaks down some programs affected by the NFL Draft. Two weeks after the NFL Draft, most college programs are not too concerned with the talent lost to the NFL.

These days, programs are so in-tune with recruiting and reloading that they know the name of every 8 year-old that suits up in Pop Warner football. “So I lost 11 seniors from last year…whoop-de-doo” as many coaches would comment “I have redshirt-freshmen with more talent”.

OK, maybe not soooo confident, but, so many programs do not sweat the off-season much. With the exception of two programs this year.
ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS
New head man Bobby Petrino may have been the one coach not to so freak-out with the Hawgs losing the most talented backfield in America…hey Petrino was the Atlanta Falcons coach last year and his star QB was doing the “Hokey-Pokey” in the federal pokey.

Open letter to Ryan Perrilloux

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Ryan Perrilloux, now of Jacksonville StateRyan, I have dogged you in the past, and I hate being right on these things. But I am not counting you out yet.

Follow along with my 11-month action plan, seek out the mentors I place before you and you could get your life and career back.

If you have had your eyes open for the last couple of weeks, you should have seen that you still have one shot left to salvage your career.

Keep your ears open and your mouth shut. Go to school, pass your classes, eat your fruits and vegetables. Go to meetings, get 400 yards of total offense and go undefeated. Watch how many new people will have your back. Read the rest of this entry →
