Fantasy News on Key Offensive Lines

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Knowshon Moreno runs past Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. It’s easy for fantasy college football enthusiasts to get tied up in the skill positions only. After all, they’re the easiest to quantify, easiest to dissect, easiest to learn about and the easiest to spot on the field.

Still, we don’t give enough love to the guys in the trenches who are blowing holes open for Knowshon Moreno (right, ICON SMI) or keeping Tim Tebow off his back (okay, he’s a bad example – Graham Harrell , then).

The best lines in 1-A / FBS / whatever they’re calling it this year give a boost to their skill position players behind them, while the worst create unintentional headaches; it’s not their fault they suck, right?

Let’s take a look at a few lines in each category (in no particular order).

Fantasy College Football Dynasties: 2005-7

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Time again to review who have been the best offenses over the last three years – we have found that many schools or even coordinators have an amazing track record of producing numbers every year and that should help narrow your focus on Draft Day.

This study uses team stats, not individual stats so this is not a tool to use by itself, you still need to do your depth chart research to layer upon this – for instance Navy led the nation the last three years in yards rushing but they usually split carries among four players. Expect that I will do that for our Preseason Owner Manual, but for now I wanted to put the stats on the site. As a quick back story, I have gone back to 2000 and ranked each college football offense on three variables:

  • Yards per play (YPP) to gauge big-play ability
  • Yards per game (YPG) since yards equal fantasy points
  • Touchdowns per game (TDG) since we shouldn’t care so much about kicker points and defensive TDs.

Can’t get enough Fantasy College Football?

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Having played fantasy sports for over 15 years, I am constantly seeking out new ways to challenge myself. With the growth of fantasy college football, it makes sense that creative minds will develop new ways to customize this game.

I talked to one of my colleagues from the Fantasy Players network, Craig Strachan. His website is Consensus Draft Services and they have developed something called the CDS Breakout League (the game is part of their message board, simply sign up to see the league – no cost to sign up) . It is basically fantasy college football with a twist. Here is how the league works.

The Trend is Your Friend in Michigan

Friday, June 20th, 2008

There are many examples where a trend can lead to success. Apple Computer and the iPod. Investors and oil stocks. Marvel Comics and blockbuster movie after blockbuster movie. It’s no different in fantasy sports.

However, the trend can become distorted as coaches switch teams and players graduate or go pro. The best we can do is dissect the past and see if we can forecast the future.

One change this off-season is Rich Rodriguez (right, Icon SMI) taking the helm at Michigan. His track record speaks for itself and now he gets the Wolverine prestige to help him recruit talent.

However, we have seen those resources not fully utilized in the past.

Player Spotlight: QB Riley Dodge, UNT Mean Green

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Riley Dodge of North Texas, shown here while at SOuthlake Carroll HS (Icon SMI) In most seasons, anyone seriously considering a true-freshman (especially a QB) as a “breakout player” would have been securely fastened in a straight-jacket and kept away from the general population.

At least at most websites but I am part owner of this thing so here we go.

However, it is rare for a highly-recruited high school QB to sign with (much less be able to locate on a map) a lower-level non-BCS program in a not-so-mid-major conference.

All while de -committing from the Texas Longhorns to do this.

Enter Riley Dodge , the incoming freshman QB at North Texas.
