Debuting our NFL Fantasy coverage with Fantasy Quants

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

As if the news of mainstream media getting on board the fantasy college football bandwagon was not enough excitement, today is the day that Fantasy College Blitz and Jeff Boyer of Fantasy Quants debut our 2008 NFL Fantasy coverage.

The brief description that follows serves as a “white paper” or user guide to Jeff’s rankings and his quantitative analysis. It might be a bit heavy, but think of it in a “risk-adjusted rankings” context – safer picks get higher rankings. Jeff has the floor.

FantasyQuants is an exclusive fantasy football database dedicated to analyzing players and performance with a proven mathematical formula. Our quantitative formulas have evaluated fantasy football players over the past few seasons (2004 – 2008) using analysis to evaluate performance, risk, and volatility.

Many fantasy football websites allocate a major portion of their research and web space analyzing and evaluating the top 10 players at each position. We will leave that analysis to them. For most fantasy players, its common knowledge that LT will be a top running back, Terrell Owens a valuable WR, and that Tom Brady will throw for a ton of yardage. At FantasyQuants, we believe that a fantasy draft truly begins after the first couple rounds – this is where championships are won! To us, your last pick is just as valuable as your first.

Our statistical models have been created to identify players undervalued by the general public. Using several long-standing analytics from MODERN PORTFOLIO THEORY allows us to systematically create value in your fantasy drafts.

Notes From the Margins v4

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Josh FreemanIn this week’s edition, we identify the snubbing of Josh Freeman of Kansas State by the Davey O’Brien Award committee (and the bizarre inclusion of Notre Dame sophomore quarterback, Jimmy Clausen by that same committee).

We also discover that Wisconsin’s Lance Smith has been suspended from the team yet again.

And we get to cry out loud in joy with San Jose State’s Dick Tomey on the return of Yonus Davis to the Spartans backfield in 2008.

Before we get to those highlights, let’s first take a look at the conferences in alphabetical order:

ACC

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Rattle and roll at Georgia Tech . . .

From the Tallahassee Democrat for Wednesday, July 23, 2008, comes news of a potential freshman starter at tailback for Paul Johnson’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket offense.

CBS changes the face of fantasy college football

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Yep, no more “Florida QB” or “Boise State RB” – a mainstream media outlet has finally stepped up with individual player names for fantasy college football.

CBS Sports debuted its new offering on Tuesday to the delight of many while making others wonder what took so long. As I have wondered aloud often, how can the #3 most popular spectator sport in the nation not even exist in fantasy popularity?

It has to do with access to information, and despite the excellent work done by U-Sports.com over the last 13 years and PreProSports.com up to this year everyone knows it wasn’t going to explode until a major media entity got behind the project.

That day is now.

NCAA response has been what you would expect…disconnected:

Our Forum getting some love at Ning

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Neil YoungIf you haven’t visited the new Forum yet, we highly encourage you to do so to interact and collaborate with other fantasy college football fanatics.

We built the Forum upon the Ning platform (Ning means peace in Mandarin, FYI) and their main blog just highlighted it over the weekend.

As a reminder, not only is there a forum but also you can set up your own blog, share tailgating photos, share videos and keep in touch with all kinds of action at FCB, including the hardest working man in the hobby with a Heart of Gold Neil Young (pictured at right)

SEC Preview: Alabama Crimson Tide

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

After signing Nick Saban with much fanfare, Alabama ended up crapping out to the tune of the exact same regular season record as the previous season… only this time they beat Arkansas and lost to UL-Monroe.  I’m not going to lie – last year filled me with an incredibly high level of glee over seeing Alabama fall flat on its face with the anointed savior.  This year should be an improvement over last, although Alabama is still going to be dealing with losses on both sides of the ball – like breaking in an all-new corps of WR.

The head coach here is some guy you’ve probably heard of a few times.  He’ll be expected to lead Alabama to three national titles in football this year.  The new OC is Jim McElwain, who comes from Fresno State after previous OC Major Appelwhite went to eventually steal Mack Brown’s job in Texas.  DC Kevin Steele returns.
