BCS Title Game – Clarity and how the Gators will Beat Sooners

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Steer? Meet Bull...

Steer? Meet bull...

Let me clear up all this confusion surrounding the BCS and Oklahoma getting ahead of the Longhorns today. It may be bull but is the Big 12′s fault.

To paraphrase the excellent argument laid out by Dr. Saturday early this am, The Big 12 Conference themselves abdicated responsibility in the event of a 3-way tie (3-ways are always messy) and gave it to the BCS system. BCS computers score the merits of the seasons body of work regardless of margin of victory or timing of the wins/losses. So Big 12 essentially dismisses any discussion of head-to-head results, forward goes the Schooner. Don’t hate the BCS on this one, hate Big 12 Commish Dan Beebe.

If November has taught me anything, it is that we will see an epic BCS title game – Florida vs. Oklahoma on January 8 in Dolphin Stadium.

Let me be the first to outline how this epic battle will go, then share with you the quote of the year. Read the rest of this entry →

More NFTM: Big 10, Pac 10 and SEC

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Disappointed as we were in the non-entity that was Texas v. Texas A&M last night, we at Fantasy College Blitz woke up reinvigorated for a second, stronger dose of rivalry games this afternoon and so far, have yet to be disappointed after a heck of a showdown in the Backyard Brawl between West Virginia and Pittsburgh and what is ending up a shootout between Colorado and Nebraska out in Lincoln . . .

That being said, however, we still found time during the day to squeeze out a few more attempts at turkey sandwiches and cranberry sauce (opted moreso for the pumpkin pie) and conjured up these second-helpings of newsworthy entrees out of the Big Ten, Pac-10, and SEC.

Head2Head Tips: No thanks for all the bye weeks

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

This week’s approach to Head2Head College Salary Cap Game is a little different. Say goodbye to a couple of mainstays whose seasons have concluded without bowl eligibility. Kansas State QB Josh Freeman bounced back nicely tallying 41 after carrying out a string of four horrible games. He ends his season as the eighth best value in H2H. Purdue RB Kory Sheets also went out with a bang putting up 29 in Purdue’s finale, finishing the season as the sixth best value.

Finally, some of the more familiar names (Britt, McCoy, Brown, Gronkowski, McCoy, and Shipley) will be omitted from this list due to midweek games and the short schedule this Saturday. Why should half the list include players that can’t help with your playoff push?

Let’s get to it:

10) Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Oregon State (10.0M, 54.35 efficiency rating)

Oregon State tailback Jacquizz Rodgers (1) scores against USC

Rodgers left the game last Saturday with what is being called a sprained AC joint. However, head coach Mike Riley is optimistic that Rodgers will be able to go against rival in-state rival Oregon this week. He’s averaging about 22 points per week and should see significant carries in an effort to keep the ball out of the Ducks’ hands. Also keep in mind Beaver quarterback Lyle Moevao could be sidelined for Sean Canfield which could mean an increased workload for Rodgers.

NFTM Turkey Leftover Edition: ACC, Big 12 and Big East

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

It’s the second-half of Rivalry Week here at Fantasy College Blitz, and as we share (surprisingly) good times with family and friends over Thanksgiving, we also find ourselves lovingly laying out our school regalia in honor of some major matchups between hated opponents such as Florida-Florida State (shameless plug, be damned – Go Noles!!!), Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Texas-Texas A&M, Pittsburgh-West Virginia, and, of course, one of our favorites out on the West Coast, the Civil War between two ranked teams in Oregon and Oregon State.

The Longhorns and Aggies go at it this Thursday evening, kicking off what should be a wild and entertaining weekend of collegiate football; a shame it should have to be an 8pm kickoff, however, as we’re sure the tryptophan will get us long before than – especially after watching a pathetic matchup between the NFL’s Tennessee Titans and the Detroit Lions.

In hopes that we can remain coherent enough to see whether Mike Sherman can get his first major win of his tenure at College Station, we peruse the nation’s papers (those leftover after our having to wrap the sad-looking remnants of a bird whose life was summed up by 20 minutes of gorging ourselves) and discover the following wonderful giblets (gravy, anyone?) from the ACC, Big XII, and Big East conferences:

2008 College Football Free-Range Turkey Awards

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

These turkeys cannot hide. While a turkey could mean three strikes in a row to a bowler or a beautiful feast to the pilgrims, turkey also means a big disappointment to the average American’s lexicon.

What icons of the college football world have disappointed, and thereby deserve the title of “turkeys”?

This is hardly a groundbreaking and innovative journalistic theme, but sounds funny enough for me to recycle and spin with an environmentally conscious angle.

I consider myself a positive person, but I realize there is more humor in being negative. On to the awards, both personal, team and institution! Read the rest of this entry →
