Fantasy College Blitz Experts QB Top 20 List

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Five of the experts from the Fantasy College Blitz recently sat down and compiled their lists of the top 20 players at Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver and Tight End.  The player pool from these lists includes athletes from all conferences in the Bowl Subdivision.

Drew Smith is fantasy College Blitz’ Official Rankings maven and his rankings are included in the process seen here: http://www.fantasycollegeblitz.com/cs2009/cheatsheet.php

Players accumulated points based on their rankings.  If the player was ranked #1 at their position they got 20 points.  If they were ranked 20th, they got 1 point- with everything in between.

Only the experts top ten Tight Ends were selected, so the points range from 10 to 1.

Editor’s Note:  Some of the lists were submitted before the news of Darren Evans’ injury, leaving the Running Back out for the year and Matt Barkley was named the starting quarterback at USC over Aaron Corp. Read the rest of this entry →

Injury updates for Week One (and fishing trip eligibility)

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Quick list, culled from numerous sources.  Also, be sure to follow Triage Time for additional injury insights, there is a new one being posted early this week.  Onto the headlines…

Ron Johnson, USC WR – ESPN says out 6-8 weeks with broken collarbone. Elevate David Ausberry on your watch list.

Damion Fletcher and D’Andre Brown, Southern Miss – hamstring pull last week for Fletcher, Brown yet to take a hit although practicing with his healing broken leg. I wonder aloud if either plays in Week One against the Braves of Alcorn State?

Andre Debose, WR Florida – may need surgery for his hamstring (what is it with the hammys on the Gators? Lifting too much weight?) Gators are deeper than the Marianas Trench so no adjustments needed here. Carl Moore, WR Florida – back injuries have kept him out of camp all fall, may be out for the season per the Gainesville Sun. These two injuries (Top 5 recruits out of college and High School respectively) make Deonte Thompson the easy WR1 in Gainesville.

Mackay Jacobsen WR BYU – concussion-like symptoms kept him from practice per Deseret News, so we at FCB are particularly keen to this story since we have him ranked much higher than the other services on the interwebs. As of now he is a go for the opener against Oklahoma, and good luck keeping him out of the game against the Sooners after spending two years away on a mission.

Jewel Hampton, RB Iowa – knee injury has him out for opener, no long term prognosis but thoughts of redshirting. Jeff Brinson is moving up the add lists on U-Sports as his replacement..

Darius Darks, WR Iowa State – hammy issues here have kept DD out of most practices and he may sit the opener. Dare I say this leaves a Darks spot on the depth chart?

OK, now for the fishing trip…

AP reports Alabama’s Mark Ingram and WR Julio Jones eligibility for the opener with Virginia Tech is in question after they took a gift of a fishing trip.Stay tuned.

Triage Time: Will Carroll Squared

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Medical SymbolIntro by John Huss:  Is it just me or is this College Football season taking soooo long to get here?  It’s almost like they pushed the first kickoff back to September 3rd or something…

With the season coming to us at a snail’s pace, it also means it’s that time where injuries begin to crop up while teams prepare for their first games.  This season, our esteemed injury expert Will Carroll will continue this fantasy college football journey with the man who taught him many things about injuries, modern medicine and appropriate injury treatment.  You can almost hear “Will…I am your father” in the background as we introduce Dr. William Carroll.  Father and son will work together this year to expand our data on the injury front, bringing to our readers the most extensive resource beyond the headlines on injuries.

This first article will be their introductory joint piece.  Although Triage Time tends to focus on the offensive players, the good Doctor did want to practice some preventative medicine by mentioning 5 defensive players.  These are players that might have a resonating impact on the entire defense by missing time.  Next week, they’ll return to the normal format covering key offensive injuries.

Realize Triage Time isn’t designed to give you injury updates the quickest…its designed to give both Will’s the chance to check with their resources and contacts to determine the extent of the injury.  With this info, they are able to develop analysis around the impact that injury will have to your fantasy roster.  That said, here are the names: Read the rest of this entry →

A few spots open at the Charity Pro-Am

Friday, August 28th, 2009

The winner’s favorite 501c3 charity (Am or Pro) receives the winnings from the Fantasy College Football Charity Pro-Am – a great message in these economic times and a great holiday gift to charity.

Deep breath...

Deep breath...

It is kinda like Pebble Beach but all online with no 17-mile Road ocean views.

Prizes too (in line with current economic meltdown) – both the FCB and CFFI will give the winner one free post and a “superfan” appearence on a podcast – you pick the venue to tell the world that you beat the best in the country. Geek might chip in something too.

A reminder for a great chance to test out your skills competing with the pros:

  • Alex Esselink of College Fantasy Football Insiders
  • Todd DeVries of College Football Geek (defending champ)
  • Joe Arpasi of Geek
  • Steve Lassan of Athlon Sports
  • Me and maybe others

Matt McClusky of the Matt Mc’s Sports Fix (yo man gimme a hit) will admit to not being a pro but is a full-time sports media personality.

Sign up and fully register now – this is all-FBS, 2 QB starters, 24 owners (at least, the U can go to 36 if y’all are down) and full throttle action bought to you by U-Sports at Athlon Sports. Teams are just $19.95 for the entire football season – that’s like a dollar a week for a great cause!

Draft is still set for Sunday AUg 30 at 3pm. If we get to 32 teams this will be a true test of your fantasy mettle on a global scale.

For the uninitiated, FCFI stands for the Fantasy College Football Invitational and Jeff Erickson won the whole thing in 2007.

For the newest edition of BlitzRadio podcast, Jeff and I discuss his 2009 draft, the triplets at Oklahoma State, trends to expect and everyone’s favorite topic, Sleepers.

In between we cover his college tour when he saw Barry Sanders play live, my wife’s famous top shelf scouting ability of Bobby Reid (17:15 mark) and his daily talk show The Rotowire Fantasy Sport Hour on Blog Talk Radio.
