ACC Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

By Matthew Melton | July 24, 2008

Despite leading the ACC in passing efficiency as a freshman, and leading the nation in completion percentage as a sophomore, Riley Skinner is probably not the type of quarterback you want on your fantasy team.  The reason is of course: touchdowns.  Skinner has thrown only 21 in two seasons.  He will also be missing his top-2 targets from 2007-Kenny Moore (1,011) and Joe Tereshinski (355).  With such a high completion percentage, Skinner should see his interception total drop (13), but big games from Skinner will be few and far between.

The player to look at from Wake will be sophomore running back Josh Adams.  In the final 8 contests of 2007, Adams averaged 91 yards per game and scored 9 touchdowns.  If he stays healthy, Adams should become the first Wake player with 1,000 yards on the ground since Chris Barclay in 2005.

At wide receiver, the Deacons have no one worth spending a high pick on.  The leading returning receiver is Chip Brinkman, who caught only 27 balls last season.  However, with the departure of Moore, (98 catches in 2007), someone will have to be the beneficiary of those extra receptions.  The Deacons do enjoy throwing to the tight end, as Tereshinski can attest, so Ben Wooster could be a fine sleeper pick if he develops.

Last season, Wake led the nation with 10 non-offensive touchdowns (1 punt return, 1 kickoff return, 6 interception returns, and 2 fumble returns).  They won’t come close to matching that number, but the talent is certainly there (9 starters back on defense) for a few defensive touchdowns.  Kicker Sam Swank his 18 of 21 field goal attempts last season and should once again be one of the ACC’s best.
