BCS Title Game – Clarity and how the Gators will Beat Sooners
November 30th, 2008 by Vince Mullins
Let me clear up all this confusion surrounding the BCS and Oklahoma getting ahead of the Longhorns today. It may be bull but is the Big 12′s fault.
To paraphrase the excellent argument laid out by Dr. Saturday early this am, The Big 12 Conference themselves abdicated responsibility in the event of a 3-way tie (3-ways are always messy) and gave it to the BCS system. BCS computers score the merits of the seasons body of work regardless of margin of victory or timing of the wins/losses. So Big 12 essentially dismisses any discussion of head-to-head results, forward goes the Schooner. Don’t hate the BCS on this one, hate Big 12 Commish Dan Beebe.
If November has taught me anything, it is that we will see an epic BCS title game – Florida vs. Oklahoma on January 8 in Dolphin Stadium.
Let me be the first to outline how this epic battle will go, then share with you the quote of the year. Both should handle their conference championship game easily. Alabama and Missouri deserve the chance to settle it on the field, but they also must accept the consequences of a major beatdown.
In the BCSMNC (BCS Mythical National Championship) I am willing to say that both offenses are as good as the game has ever seen – so call that a push. But I give HUGE edge to the Florida Defense over the Sooners average squad so they should be able to close the gap on this seemingly crazy offensive orgy.
Gator Special Teams will further define the difference – notice that the Sooners allowed another kick return for touchdown? That makes it 5 for the season, worst in the nation. Let me introduce you to Brandon James in the Blue and Orange.
Yes, the Sooners have scored 60+ in four straight games, and the Gators have not done that but once this season. Let us instead look at margin of victory which takes strength of schedule and defense into consideration. Also, I will factor out the games each has had recently versus lower levels of competition – Citadel for the Gators and Texas A&M for Oklahoma (yes, that is a shot). Pretty much a push as Sooners average a 30-point win and the Gators average a 36-point beat down going back to Halloween.
Plus, the game is in Florida.
Finally, do not underestimate the Tim Tebow factor. That sounds cliche as the defending Heisman Trophy QB has been credited for everything from the latest winning streak to solving global warming, but he has shown immense leadership in big games before – remember last season in the Cap One Bowl it was the Michigan offense that took over. Remember his post game presser after the Ole Miss team – one of the most inspirational and honest speeches you will ever see. (get to 2:25 mark)
To paraphrase, “To the fans and everybody in Gator Nation, I am sorry, extremely sorry. My goal was an undefeated season, something that hadn’t been done around here before. But I promise you a lot of good will come from this. You will not see any player in the nation work as hard as me for the rest of the season. You will never see someone push a team as hard as I will push this team the rest of the season. You will not see a team play harder than we will the rest of the season. God Bless.”
I am ready to crown the Gators National Champions again and it isn’t even December yet. Get in line behind Superman and me on this one.
