Big 10 Bookends: Big 10 is Big Pimpin’

October 14th, 2009 by Mike Ware

Big 10 logoHow about that Big Ten Conference!  7 teams with 4 wins already.  Plus one undefeated team, three at 5-1 and three at 4-2.  What other conference can claim that?  Only the Big Ten, baby!  And hey, you drafted Big Ten players for points on your fantasy team.  Well at least, that’s what I did.

Game of the Week Recap

Iowa narrowly beats Michigan 30-28.  A couple of notes real quick; Iowa now has a 10 game win streak.  I had to look this up and the last time they won 10 in a row, Warren G Harding was president- or about 86 years ago for those of you struggling to remember when that was.  Ok, now back to the game.  Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi had 284 yards passing and 2 TD’s.  TE Tony Moeaki, my favorite Big Ten TE, had 105 yards receiving, 2 TD’s and earned the Big Ten offensive player of the week.  Iowa RB’s had a tough week but Wegher did pick up a TD while Adam Robinson rushed for 70 yards.  You have to love the Robinson/Wegher combo; two freshmen who should get better going forward.  Now my favorite Wolverine Tate Forcier had a rough week, only 94 yards passing.  The big points Wolverines this week were RB Brandon Minor with 95 yards rushing and 2 TD’s.  RB Denard Robinson ran for 49 yards and 1 TD.  WR Martavious (best first name in college football) Odoms hauled in 76 receiving yards.

Other offensive stars this week include:

MSU RB Larry Caper had 139 yards rushing and receiving and one TD as Michigan State beat Illinois 24-14.

Purdue WR Keith Smith had 126 yards including one 61 yard TD reception against Minnesota.

Minnesota WR Eric Decker was held in check with only 50 yards this week.

Northwestern QB Mike Kafka had 191 passing yards, 53 rushing yards and 2 TD’s.

Penn State QB Daryll Clark passed for 234 yards and 3 TD’s PLUS he rushed for 11 yards and 1 TD.

Wisconsin QB Scott Tolzien posted 250 yards passing but had 2 interceptions as the Badgers suffered their first loss of the season.

Looking ahead to week 7 and yes, there is a trophy game this week.  Not one, but two!  Personally I think every game between Big Ten schools should involve some trophy.  Anyway, this week the coveted Heartland Trophy and the Governor’s Victory Bell games will be played.  Now, the Heartland Trophy game is also my pick for game of the week since Iowa (6-0) faces Wisconsin (5-1).  The Bell game features Minnesota and Penn State.  I am going to say Iowa and PSU will be your winners this week.  Look for the QB’s to shine for both Iowa and PSU.

Elsewhere we have Ohio State at Purdue, expect decent numbers from your Buckeyes this week.  I like Purdue QB Joey Elliott going into this game.  Northwestern and Michigan State face each other and I am not sure about this one.  I feel like both teams are going to post some big numbers.  Mike Kafka should be solid in this one.

Michigan takes on Delaware State.  I think I will take Michigan on this one.  Yes, sometimes I really go out on a limb.

And Illinois at Indiana wraps up the Big Ten schedule for this week.  Start Tandon Doss and Ben Chappell

 Predictions for week 7:

Ohio State over Purdue, 31-20

Penn State over Minnesota, 38-31

Indiana over Illinois, 28-17

Michigan State over Northwestern, 31-28

Michigan over Delaware State, 45-14

And for the big game, I am sticking with the Hawkeyes until they get beat.  Iowa 44-Wisconsin 28
