Big 12 Bookend

November 4th, 2009 by James Lawrence

We expected Oklahoma State’s offense to struggle, but the Texas defense was so dominant – scoring two touchdowns of their own – that the offense hardly saw the field. If your league plays defenses, the Longhorns were a great start.

Texas Tech and Kansas figured to throw for 400 yards apiece, but ended up passing for about that much total. The surprise offensive player of the game was Baron Batch, who not only eclipsed the 100 yard mark but ran it in four times for TDs!

Of the three touchdowns scored in the Nebraska-Baylor game, one was off an interception and another blocked a punt. Nobody had a good offensive game here either. At least the Huskers won the turnover battle this week.

Danario Alexander

Derrick Washington and Danario Alexander celebrate a Washington touchdown

Danario Alexander caught two first quarter TD passes from Blaine Gabbert, finishing with 123 of the quarterback’s 192 yards passing. Derrick Washington also scored in the first quarter against an increasingly inept Colorado team, finishing the day with 99 yards rushing.

Jerrod Johnson threw for 3 TDs and ran for another as the Aggies routed Iowa State. Johnson accounted for 267 yards of total offense, most in the passing game. Cyrus Gray ran for 119 yards but was kept out of the end zone.

Landry Jones threw three TD passes in the first quarter, finishing the game with 294 yards passing and 4 TDs. His favorite target continues to be Ryan Broyles, who had 91 yards receiving and 2 TDs. Demarco Murray had 63 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. Kansas State’s second half rally was too little, too late – although Daniel Thomas finished with a respectable 88 yards and 1 score, and Brandon Banks caught 9 passes for 156 yards.

Week 10 Picks

The Texas Longhorns are coming down the home stretch with four games. They should be big favorites leading up to the Big 12 championship game. This weekend they host UCF in a game that should see Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley put up huge numbers.

Jerrod Johnson is a strong play against a struggling Colorado team, as he’s likely to account for good yardage on the ground and in the air.

Oklahoma State will look to get back on track by travelling to Iowa State. Keith Toston may be the strongest play here, as well as Hubert Anyiam at WR. I’m not sure what Zac Robinson‘s overall numbers will look like, as he has been streaky this season.

Missouri’s trio of Blaine Gabbert, Danario Alexander, and Derrick Washington could all be in for big games against Baylor.

And lastly, Nebraska-Oklahoma could be another defensive struggle. The Huskers, who are already struggling on offense, will have a rough outing against a tough Sooner defense. That is almost for certain. On the other side of the ball, Nebraska has a great defensive line led by Ndamukong Suh, and Oklahoma has struggled against teams with a capable front four this season.

Texas Tech has the week off.
