Big East Bookend: To forgive is Noel Devine
October 6th, 2009 by Vince Mullins
Rewind the past week in Big East Football – three different days of action as we wave good bye to summer.
West Virginia 35, Colorado 24
Noel Devine has scored in every game in 2009. He only scored four times last year. Example again why trends do not just simply extend into time, they tend to revert to the mean. In other words, a playmaker only scoring 4 is the oddity, not that he has knelt in the endzone six times in four games. Freshman RB Ryan Clarke (6-0. 220) stole a couple short TD runs in Q4, further exasperating Devine owners.
And Jarrett Brown is darned good. PS – Remember WR Markques Simas of Colorado.
South Florida 34, Syracuse 20
Paulus-palooza? That “Cuse circus tent imploded like that Dallas Cowboy facility with FIVE picks and a fumble. WR Mike Williams (right) put two more on the board, he might be the most consistent fantasy WR in the country.
Bulls with BJ Daniels at the helm are ON. He has three TDs over 60 yards in two starts against FSU and the Orange. I suggest not giving in to the siren song of Carlton Mitchell and all his long TD sprints – he has NFL talent but has yet to put it together. Maybe Daniels is the key to unlocking his potential? and Mike Ford teased owners again with a man-like 2 TDs with defenders bouncing off him like he were Iron Man.
Pittsburgh 35, Louisville 10
Welcome back Dorin Dickerson to the TE stratosphere – two more touchdowns from ridiculously steady QB Bill Stull. Stull put three on the board to run his season long TD/INT ratio to 11-1 despite three road games! Very worthy of a spot start sometime. Freshman RB Dion Lewis slowed down a bit as I predicted, two TD carries given away.
Cardinals? Meh…Britney Spears thinks Louisville’s body of work has headed downhill. There was a Josh Chichester sighting.
No. 10 Cincinnati 37, Miami (OH) 13
I got the Bearcats just outside the top tier of college football temas as of this week. I expected more of a blowout here, so nothing to see here. Just another multi-TD game from QB Tony Pike, one of them to Gilyard. Yawn.
Fast Forward to this weekend’s game predictions after the jump.
NOON West Virginia (BlitzIndex Defense Rank #73) at Syracuse (BI 91)
Mike Williams should continue his dominance – can Paulus regain his production? If I didn’t know better the Mountaineer defense horrid 103rd ranked yards per play was due to an inefficient offense or bad punting – either way look for high scores. Devine and Brown should be started without hesitation.
3:30 PM ET Texas Southern at Rutgers
How about that Scarlet Knights defense???
3:30 PM ET Connecticut (BI 24) at Pittsburgh (BI30)
Two top quartile defenses, so curb your enthusiasm. Huskies are Top Ten in both Yards per play allowed and YPG allowed – could the Stull Express finally need a refuel? Likely, and I am still cautious on RB Dion Lewis. But you cannot afford to sit TE Dickerson. For UConn, Andre Dixon seems to be the more steady over Jordan Todman at RB, even when you factor out the Rhode Island fiasco.
730p Southern Miss (BI 56) at Louisville (BI 86) There is a game in Baton Rouge at the same time?
SMiss is reeling after injuries to all the triplets (Austin Davis – OUT, Damian Fletcher – groin, DeAndre Brown – shoulder, leg), Louisville should smell the upset. Victor Anderson spot start seems particularly, well, stinky.
