Big East Bookends: Bulls on Parade?

November 1st, 2009 by Vince Mullins

REWIND

USF 30, West Virginia 19

BJ Daniels (7) throws one of his many effective passes Friday Night. Fantasy owners should think of a long term relationship with him.

Noel Devine was shut down (39 yards rushing) and shut out (no TD) for the first time this season. THIS is what the Bulls defense is supposed to look like despite their penchant for disappearing after the autumnal equinox. Bulls QB BJ Daniels needs to be on your roster if you are in a keeper league – I honestly think half the pass plays are just called “4-wide and get open” as he just makes plays extemporaneously.

Cincinnati 28, Syracuse 7

Speaking of extemporaneous QBs, Zach Collaros created a couple scrambling masterpieces in the Dome and WR Armon Binns seems to be his preferred target. Collaros run threat constantly sucked in the Orange defense and that allowed for some big pass plays.

WR Mike Williams played, but was useless under the rotating QB system of Paulus and Nassib. This game was pretty tight the whole way as the Bearcats never really threw the knockout punch.

Most disappointing to me and other fantasy guys was that neither of the top wideouts (Marshawn Gilyard and Williams) produced a darned thing.

Rutgers 28, Connecticut 24

Heavy are the hearts in Storrs Connecticut with another down to the wire loss. After deuling 95+ yard kickoff return TDs in the first half, Rutgers took the lead on freshman sensation QB Tom Savage TD passes. UConn roared back with the run and the suddenly hot WR Marcus Easley to take the lead late in front of an adoring home crowd. Savage struck again with an 81-yard skinny post to ultra-speedy Tim Brown for the second time. Brown’s huge day was bittersweet as he was a childhood friend of the slain Jasper Howard and looked forward to the matchup all year long.

Want some strange parallelism of this game to last week? Both were losses of 28-24, and UConn gave up opening kickoff return TDs in each game. Keep an eye on UConn QB Zach Frazer – a former ND QB takes over again with the shoulder injury to Cody Endres.

Louisville 21, Arkansas State 13

Cardinals get results from their 3rd QB of the year – Frosh Will Stein took over for injured Adam Froman and was efficient but not fantasy worthy. RB Victor Anderson out also, Bilal Powell got 90 in his stead. Nothing to see here.

Pitt was idle.

FAST FORWARD

Connecticut at No. 8 Cincinnati

Cincy needs to step it up after a listless win at Syracuse. It will be constructive to watch Coach Brian Kelly manage the QB situation as Zach Collaros has earned playing time in Tony Pike’s absence. Watch for how Mardy Gilyard produces without Pike.

UConn has transformed into a passing team the last two weeks, when most of their success came when Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman ran with success. How will coaches prepare against the best defense on their schedule?

Syracuse at No. 15 Pittsburgh

Play all Panthers. Stay tuned on Mike Williams who has permastarter status until he is suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team”.

Louisville at No. 21 West Virginia

This sounds like a bloodbath with Mountaineers in charge, no matter who plays QB for the Cards. WVU blood should still be boiling after getting nothing done in Tampa, look for Noel Devine, Jarrett Brown and even Jock Sanders to go nuts.

Rutgers and USF are idle
