BlitzIndex Breakdown: Offense and defense efficiency ratings
December 16th, 2008 by Vince Mullins
As we approach the kickoff of college football bowl season this Saturday, I thought it would be important to update the BlitzIndex not only for the defense efficiency ratings, but also the offense so you can better identify mismatches.
Whether you are analyzing matchups for Head2Head Playoffs, to get an edge in the water cooler talk, or whatever your entertainment purpose might be, the BlitzIndex will help you see way beyond the usual “by the game” statistics.
As we continue our bowl coverage, you will see these stats laid out for you, but after the jump is all the raw data.
Google Docs Spreadsheet for Pre-Bowl Game Work
I use three measurables that mean the most to the fantasy player, and two of them drill down output per play -
- Yards per play (YPP),
- Yards per point (YPPt) and
- Points per game (PPG).
Offense uses yards gained, defense uses yards allowed. What you have is a truer look at a team’s per play efficiency than normal national rankings allow – I rank each team by each variable, then add up the ranks for a raw score. That raw score is then ranked for the national BlitzIndex.
USC Trojan defense continues to look like one of the best defenses ever with a #1 ranking in all spots. The Florida offense ranks as our #1 offense just ahead of their BCS National Championship Game opponent in Oklahoma
Also on the spreadsheet I included the Red Zone efficiency defense – did you know that Miami (FL) only stopped opponents twice in 39 attempts inside their 20? Cal RB Jahvid Best is licking his lips thinking it couldn’t get any better than his 300-yard game versus Washington…thanks to the NCAA web site for all the raw data.
