BLITZindex College Football Defense Rankings, Nov 8
November 9th, 2009 by Vince Mullins
The BLITZindex is an equal weighted measure of national ranks in three team defense categories – yards per play allowed (YPP), Yard per point allowed (YPPt), and points per game allowed (PPG). Yards per game allowed is included in the study for comparison only but not the rankings.

With the throttling beatdown of the Oklahoma Sooners and with 68% of precincts reporting, Fantasy College Blitz is comfortable projecting that the Nebraska Cornhusker Blackshirts Defense has won the race again to be the top defense in the land. They are Back in Black.
The Pelini Brothers succeed in resurrecting the legendary Nebraska defense to its proper place atop the country – Top five rankings in all the categories illustrate just how ineffective the Sun Belt and Big 12 offenses have been in 2009 when facing the Huskers.
Other notes of interest:
- Texas has a huge lead in yards per play allowed with just 3.53 – a full 0.35 yards better than #2 Alabama and even the 7th ranked TCU allows 4 ypp. Nation-worst EMU allows twice that! Kudos to Will Muschamp for adding the missing link to the Longhorns evolution towards the national championship.
- Army is in the top decile in yds/gm allowed at just over 290 (not part of the index) and 33rd in ypp, showing that the defense is quite stout. The offense and special teams are not doing their part though as the Black Knights are 60th in ppg and even worse at 110th in yds/pt. All that equals out to the 69th overall defense. I need to research further but it is likely that Army opponents have the best starting field position in the history of football given those divergences.
- Western Kentucky may have fired the wrong coach today because the defense almost had the bizarro-perfect score of 120 in all the digits – the Hilltoppers are the worst in the country in pts allowed (44.56) and yds/play allowed (7.18). Seven teams are worse than them in yards per point allowed (11.53). Ha, every two plays equals a point – can it get much worse?
