Can’t get enough Fantasy College Football?

June 20th, 2008 by John Huss

Having played fantasy sports for over 15 years, I am constantly seeking out new ways to challenge myself. With the growth of fantasy college football, it makes sense that creative minds will develop new ways to customize this game.

I talked to one of my colleagues from the Fantasy Players network, Craig Strachan. His website is Consensus Draft Services and they have developed something called the CDS Breakout League (the game is part of their message board, simply sign up to see the league – no cost to sign up) . It is basically fantasy college football with a twist. Here is how the league works.

Rules:

1. Leagues shall be formed of 8 teams and teams will be grouped into leagues based on sign up order.

2. Each team shall be permitted to draft 15 Division IA players and to retain a roster of 15 players throughout the season.

3. 1 player at each of the following positions shall be started each week:

QB (quarterback)
RB (running back)
WR (wide receiver)
TE (tight end)
DL (defensive line)
LB (linebacker)
DB (defensive back)
ST (special teamer)

4. A Special Teamer can be a kicker or a return specialist. A return specialist may not also start in any other position.

5. No player may start more than once in any given week.

6. The regular scoring system will be as follows:

Offensive:
10 yards = 1pt (RB/WR/TE)
25 yards = 1pt (QB)
TD = 6pts
INT = -2pts
Fumble = -1pt

Defensive:
Tackle = 2pts (1pt for an assisted tackle)
Sack = 4pts (2pts for an assisted sack)
INT = 6pts
Forced Fumble = 3pts
Fumble recovered = 3pts
TD = 6pts
Safety = 2pts

Special Teams:
Field Goal = 3pts
XP = 1pt
10 yards = 1pt (for returners)
TD = 6pts

7. Players will then score points based upon their “break out” performances in comparison with their 2007 averages. Offensive players will be compared to their 2007 average yards per game, defensive players will be compared to their 2007 average number of tackles per game. Bonus points will then be scored as follows:

Offensive:
Increase over 2007 average production = 1pt per 10 yards
Decrease over 2007 average production = -1 pt per 10 yards

Defensive:
Increase over 2007 average production = 1pt per tackle
Decrease over 2007 average production = -1pt per tackle

8. Special Teams players will not be considered for break out points.

You can read up on the rest of the rules via their message boards. The format looks challenging and the best part is that it is completely free. With so few outlets for fantasy college football (for now), I thought it was important to share another version of this game. Now get over there and dominate!
