Total ACCess: Is Clemson Legit?

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

RB David Wilson thinks he's Heisman material (Icon SMI)

Week 5 in the ACC brings some tough matchups and some cupcakes. You’ll have to tread lightly with some of you stars like Clemson QB Tajh Boyd and Duke QB Sean Renfree. Some guys on the other hand should have solid matchups. Let’s jump right into it.

#13 Clemson 14 at #11 Virginia Tech 28 – Clemson is not as good as they have appeared the last two weeks. Period. They played against a horrible Auburn defense and then a FSU defense that decided to give up. Things will not be the same for the Tigers this week. QB Tajh Boyd will find it difficult to get things going against this stifling defense. WR Sammy Watkins would be the only player I’d consider starting for the Tigers. On the other side, RB David Wilson is going to show why he’s the best RB in the ACC. Against this porous run defense, I can easily see him going for 150 yards and 2+ scores. Total ACCess: We’re Not All About Conference Realignment!

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

QB Mike Glennon hopes to pass his way into fantasy relevance. (Icon SMI)

NC State 21 vs Cincinnati 27 – Wolfpack QB Mike Glennon seems to be finding his rhythm, despite the fact that there truly is not a reliable WR on this team. After looking weak against Liberty to start the season, Glennon scored three times in week 2 and then four times last week. This should be another game where he should have the opportunity for multiple scores. T.J. Graham and Tobias Palmer have hauled in half of Glennon’s completions, so clearly they are go-to receivers, but they only have 3 of Glennon’s 8 TDs, so they are a gamble. The Wolfpack spread the ball around too much in the red zone to consider anyone a “sure thing.” The running game will continue to be split between the yards-getter in Curtis Underwood Jr. and the TD-getter, James Washington. Neither are really good plays this week. I expect Glennon to throw for 250 yards and 2 TDs, one of which will go to T.J. Graham, who will only come up with 50 yards receiving. Total ACCess: Week Three Preview featuring Ineligi-Bowl and Sooners-Seminoles

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Three big non-conference matchups on the docket – presented in increasing order of national interest. My crystal ball is ready for this weekend!

Terps RB Davin Meggett

Fear the Turtle unis: Terps RB Davin Meggett played great even if he didn't look great. (Icon SMI)

#18 West Virginia 27 vs Maryland 31

Remember when QB Danny O’Brien looked like a phenom against Miami Labor Day night? Remember when they had half a dozen chances in the red zone and couldn’t punch it in? Remember when West Virginia trailed Norfolk State last week. Well all of that changes this week. West Virginia will start to get things clicking on offense and Maryland will finally find the end zone. O’Brien will put up average passing numbers, but ground game, led by Davin Meggett (right), will control this game. I’m expecting Meggett to top 100 yards and 2 scores (1 through rushing and 1 receiving). Read the rest of this entry →

Total ACCess: Week 2 Preview

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

RB David Wilson: Another in a long line of fantasy RBs out of VTech. (Icon SMI)

#11 Virginia Tech 40 at East Carolina 28 – The Hokies just flat out dominated a good Appalachian State team that typically is in contention for an FCS championship each year. QB Logan Thomas was exactly what Tech needed him to be; a game manager. They have a solid enough defense and impeccable enough rushing attack that they’re not going to ask Thomas to go win games, but more importantly just don’t lose them. Now that RB David Wilson is not competing for carries, he really showed what he’s made of, to the tune of 162 yards and 3 TDs. Yikes! This will be another game where the Hokies rushing attack will be potent, but their defense will be tested early and often by the powerful passing attack of Dominique Davis and the Pirates. Total ACCess: Week 1 Preview

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

FSU fans....welcome to the era of QB EJ Manuel (Icon SMI)

Can you feel the excitement in the air? Can you smell the charcoal burning? Can you hear the crowds going nuts? Can you taste the sweetness of victory? IT’S FOOTBALL SEASON BABY!

After what feels like a way-too-long period of time without any football (thanks a lot NFL lockout), we finally get to watch some ball. Let’s kick the tires and light the fires. Here are my ACC predictions for week one.

Florida State 37 vs. Louisiana-Monroe 10: Jimbo Fisher will look to get a comfortable lead early and then get as many guys game-day experience as he can. Quarterback EJ Manuel will have a slow start in this one as he works out some of the jitters, but after two series, he’ll get in sync with his playmakers allowing him to score 3 total TDs (2 passing and 1 rushing). FSU’s defense is the best play here as most of the offensive starters should be pulled somewhere in the 3rd quarter. Read the rest of this entry →
