Pike (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) and Cincinnati got some good news with the injury being diagnosed as a wrist sprain. The bad news is that this is the same wrist that was fractured last year and a plate had to be inserted at that time. Surgical hardware is not supposed to loosen, but some of the collisions in football are very similar to getting hit by a truck. Pike underwent a surgical procedure to tighten the plate on Tuesday morning, so he is not expected to see much, if any, playing time against Louisville this week and probably limited action again next week against Syracuse. He should be ready for the next Big East test against Connecticut the following week. Read the rest of this entry →
It has been reported by various sources that Wide Receivers Mike Floyd of Notre Dame and Ryan Broyles of Oklahoma may be “returning to action sooner than anticipated”. Broyles was allegedly diagnosed with a “shoulder fracture” two weeks ago. If there was in fact a fracture, there is no way in medical science for it to heal in fourteen days (fractures typically take 6-8 weeks to heal). Since Broles is a wide receiver, his shoulder cannot be sufficiently braced or splinted without taking away his ability to raise his arms above his shoulders-an action extremely necessary for a wide receiver. Although there has been some experimentation utilizing hyperbaric chambers to hasten bone union (primarily in professional ice hockey), two weeks is just not enough time for a fractured bone to heal. If the original diagnosis was correct, I would expect Broles to miss a minimum of another month before being cleared to return to activity. Read the rest of this entry →
Davis suffered a Lisfranc fracture of his foot during the Golden Eagles loss to UAB. A Lisfranc fracture is a fracture and dislocation of the joints in the mid-foot, usually involving the metatarsals that form the transverse arch of the foot. This fracture usually occurs when the foot is plantarflexed and someone lands on the heel. Healing time is 6-8 weeks and that means the Southern Miss will have to get a Bowl bid if Davis is to see any further action this season. Talented, but inexperienced Martevious Young will be called upon to be the offensive field general. Read the rest of this entry →
Quarterback Tim Tebow, University of Florida –Concussion
The leader in the Heisman race had a tough week that started out with the flu and ended up with a concussion suffered in the second half of the game against Kentucky. Fortunately, the flu symptoms have now dissipated and the concussion symptoms will have an extra week to disappear because the Gators have an off week in their schedule this week. Remember, a concussion is an injury to the brain and he is monitored closely- he passed an EEG test before leaving the hospital on Monday. Look for a healthy Tim Tebow on the field leading the Gators against LSU on October 10. Florida’s medical staff has taken excellent care of Tebow and the extra time will assure that all symptoms from the concussion are gone, so expect no memory lapses or forgotten pass patterns from Superman. Quarterback Matt Grothe, University of South Florida – Knee
Grothe suffered a torn ACL (the ligament in the knee that prevents accessory anterior movement of the tibia on the femur) during the first half of the Bull’s victory against Charleston Southern which makes that a very expensive victory. Grothe is out for the season and will undergo reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL. His back-up, two sport USF athlete B.J. Daniels, is a redshirt freshman with very little collegiate game experience. With Florida State up next for the Bulls, Grothe’s experience will definitely be missed. Read the rest of this entry →
