My 2011 Value QB Strategy Worksheet

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Denard Robinson of Michigan went undrafted last season and had many outstanding games - so why draft any QB high? (Icon SMI)

It should be well known by our seventh year of publishing, the Fantasy College Blitz position on drafting QBs – but if not, here it is loud and clear again:

In a 1-QB start league, if you can’t get a top 3 QB, wait and pick your QB1 when everyone else is going after QB2s.

Even if you are just playing with the AQ 65-team version of fantasy college football, your twelve owner fantasy league can pick from five deep of starters every week – it is the old demand-supply equation. So why spend valuable early round picks on a over-supplied position? Remember, NO ONE drafted Michigan’s Denard Robinson nor UCF’s Jeff Godfrey in 2010 and they bordered on stardom for the entire season.

My main criteria: unquestioned starter, strong November performance from last season, respected coaching staff and a favorable schedule. To that end, here are some names I like when prepping my pre-fall camp preview of the nation’s college football QBs. You can likely grab them in the eighth round or later. (Two drafts to look at are the Athlon Sports Mock #1 and the almost finished NCAA Project Dynasty League [K = Keeper, R = Recruit])

BCS National Championship 2011 Preview: Part Two: Matchups and sentiment give the edge to Ducks over Tigers

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

Part two of my BCS National Championship Game preview gets to the heart of the matter: what are Oregon and Auburn are likely to do to each other in the perfect conditions of Cardinal Stadium in Glendale, AZ?

Ducky

Learn to Ducky - wings of steel will be needed in the 2011 BCS National Championship (Bleacher Report)

If I had to rank my “spread offense gurus”, the Top 5 in no particular order would be Mike Leach, Dana Holgerson, Tony Franklin, Chip Kelly and Gus Malzahn. I think that is what makes this game such a treat (and also why the inability of Leach to get another head coaching gig astounds me) – we are truly witnessing the pinnacle of offensive football operations. Should be a great show for college football freaks and casual fans alike.

Matchups, links, deconstruction of Vegas sentiment and my pick for Ducky to get his push-ups on more than Mike the Tiger after the jump.

Oregon and Auburn legitimize the spread offfense

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

By Mark Colyer, SpreadOffense.com

Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly pushes the tempo of offensive innovation. (Icon SMI)

The two teams in the BCS national title game, No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Oregon, are perfect examples of how the spread offense style of attack has taken off in college football.

The no huddle, get-on-the-field-and-go style of play that a spread offense makes possible has done much to improve the excitement of college football. The bowl championship series title game, to be played on January 10, 2011 in Glendale, Arizona between two spread offense teams will likely be a high-scoring game with plenty of big plays.

Ever since 1927, when Rusty Russell coached a team of undernourished orphan boys to numerous championships in Texas by highlighting running patterns and a good passing game over brute force rushes, the no huddle spread has been seen as a “gimmicky” strategy to provide sub par talented teams a chance to compete against better competition.

However, the clear ascendancy of Auburn and Oregon in the 2010 NCAA football season has done much to legitimize the spread offense as one of the best offensive strategies in football. Read the rest of this entry →

What Will MusCHOMP hire means to the Gators

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

I am loving the Will Muschamp hire as the head coach for the Florida Gators. Rapid fire begins now:

Will Muschamp is introduced as the new head coach of the Florida Gators

Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp expresses his singular goal for the football team (Icon SMI)

One, he’s worked for some of the best HBCs in the business in Nick Saban, Tommy Tuberville and Mack Brown so he has been around a lot of winning teams and has worked for coaches that know how to win. It doesn’t get much better in terms of mentors than those three.

Two, he obviously knows defense, and his defenses have been among the best in the nation since he got his first DC opportunity with LSU. It was LSU’s defense that led them to the 2003 National Championship Game. It was Texas’ D that kept them in the game versus Alabama last year after Colt McCoy went down. Certainly, Saban gets a lot of credit for LSU’s D but Muschamp was doing all the day-to-day teaching/coaching for that defense. He’s had not just “good” defenses everywhere he’s been; he’s had GREAT defenses.

I read how ‘bad’ Texas’ D was this year when, in fact, they were 7th in the nation in fewest yards allowed per game. That’s better than most everyone in the SEC sans Alabama and they had to battle the Big XII offenses with very young personnel… True, the TX ppg allowed suffered this year but that had as much to do with Texas’ O and turnovers as it did their D.

In terms of STOPPING AN OPPONENT, no one does it any better than MusCHOMP.

Two more after the jump. Read the rest of this entry →
