PODCAST: Heisman Pundit’s Chris Huston 2009 Preview

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Most college football fans and even writers are looking no farther than Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow for the 2009 Heisman Trophy. No heated Fox News type arguments on this episode of BlitzRadio as both agree that Colt McCoy is the favorite.

The creator of the 15, er, 10 Heismandments Chris Huston discusses the expected anointing of Texas Colt McCoy as this season’s trophy holder, Sam Bradford leading the best offense of the decade last season and we also kinda talk about that Tebow guy. Despite for our clearly professed man-love and super-high expectations for Houston’s Case Keenum, it is hard to make a case for him as a legit contender.

Play his HP Fantasy Challenge for a chance to win two tix to the BCS Title game! (shameless plug for his appearance tonight)

Fantasy College Blitz 2008 Fantasy POY is…

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

As fantasy college football fans, we don’t necessarily care about the Heisman Trophy.  The won/loss records of most teams aren’t so interesting either.  In fact, do you even know how many wins Rice had?  Do you even care? This leads to the question that matters: Who is the Fantasy version of ”Most Outstanding” Player of The Year (FPOY)?

The official Heisman Trophy has been handed out in one of the tightest three man race in the history of the award. Sam Bradford beat out Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow to claim the award for the most ‘outstanding’ player in the nation.  As I broke down in my previous article, based on the criteria used by the Heisman committee, Bradford was indeed the most deserving of the award.

Many think this question is as easy as crowning the athlete with the most fantasy points(FP) on the season as the best fantasy player.  While FPs are ultimately the most important factor, I think it is often misleading.  Under most scoring systems, the QB position will almost always outscore all other positions.  Does that mean a non-QB will never be the top player?  The answer is obviously no and in fact I will argue that a QB, despite always outscoring the other positions, will have a more difficult time claiming the honor (I know, the picture gives it away).

Bradford wins Heisman Trophy

Bradford takes the podium

Bradford takes the podium

When I got the text the Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford had won the Heisman, I thought back to all the articles I read ahead of him grabbing the starting job last year.

In retrospect, he sounded like another Tebow.

Shoots par golf. Good basketball player. Solid A-grades student. Gets his pick of the Sooner female population. Walked on puddles – working up to bodies of water. Sooner Nation can get excited.

In the spring of 2007 most saw the gig going to Joey Halzle, the big Junior who had done his time behind Rhett Bomar and Paul Thompson and deserved the shot. The immortal Phil Steele of course was ahead of the curve and had penciled in rFr Sam Bradford PS#20 HT.

As Drew Smith penned with his usual rigorous research, Sam Bradford was the most deserving candidate and the Sooner took home the award. ON TO THE BANQUETS!

Some quick hits and links on the award to go with your Breakfast Burrito: Read the rest of this entry →

Checking In On The Fantasy Heisman

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

It has been awhile since we discussed this year’s Fantasy Heisman candidates.  Quite a few things have happened since the last report.  Michael Crabtree has been bumped off the list by the likes of WR Dez Bryant.  Crabtree will need some big finishes to get back in the mix, however he is fighting off injury which may kill those chances.  On the outside looking in is RB LeSean McCoy, based on the surge in TDs over the last three games (9 TDs in those games).  However, the top three RBs have a pretty solid hold on things.  Even though QB Dan Johnson has a nice lead over the rest of the field, anything can happen these last few weeks of the fantasy season.  Be sure to check back later for more updates.

Fantasy Heisman Watch List: Trend or Reality?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

We’ve been running this watch for a few weeks and the results continue to slant towards QBs.  Going into this season, I would have expected a few names like Tebow, Harrell and LeFevour to be placed on this list.  Only one of those is here and surprisingly, Harrell does not sit at the top like many would have suspected.  Five of the top six names are QBs, with guys like Max Hall and Case Keenum making the top 5.

Michael Crabtree stubbornly breaks up the top 5 as the lone WR on the list.  There are vocal members on our Forum who think he has not performed to this level.  Granted, many of us thought he would regress to the norm, which is exactly what has happened so far.  However, his last game out shows he warrants the benefit of the doubt and we’ve voted him into the top half.

The other interesting thing is that the RBs that have made the list take up the last 4 spots.  Basically, they are afterthoughts.  Those are the detail for this week, here is the watch list.
