Fantasy College Football Invitational: Expert League Report, Grading the Draft

September 3rd, 2009 by Adam Mankuta

This past month 14 College Football Fantasy Experts from 14 different affiliations got together and conducted their annual draft in advance of the new season.  Each team was able to select players from the entire  player pool of teams in the Bowl subdivision.   Weekly starting lineups will include one starting Quarterback, two Running Backs, three Wide Receivers, one Tight End, one Kicker and one defense/special teams.

Teams were graded on their best draft pick, a player that could have been selected later, the teams strengths & weaknesses, concluding with an overall GPA with a bold prediction of how the team will finish.

But in fantasy sports it is important to remember it is all about the game and how you play it.  While these rosters and comments may look accurate and thought out now, injuries, demotions and owners working the waiver wire are all ways that these rankings can be flipped upside down by the seasons end.  As evidence, take into account that James Starks was lost for the year shortly after this draft, while Aaron Corp was unseated as USC QB by Matt Barkley.

#1 U-Sports-Nathan Karp

Best Pick: The best pick of the draft for U-Sports was Jeremy Avery in the 10th round.  With Ian Johnson gone, the Broncos will use Avery in the backfield, out wide, in space and all over the field.  He is quick and can score from on any play.  Avery is a deep sleeper and will be a huge factor in 2010.  Watch him shine in Week 1 against Oregon.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Aaron Hernandez in round five seemed a bit early.  Unless you are grabbing Pitta or Gresham, you can wait on Tight Ends.  With other difference makers at RB and WR on the board, better to wait for the TE.

Strength: Whenever you can pair Tim Tebow and Jevan Snead, arguably the two best quarterbacks in the nations best conference, you have a strength.  Outside of bye weeks, U-Sports will not have to alter their QB spot all year.

Weakness: The one weak spot may be at Wide Receiver.  The development of Damian Williams is key for U-Sports as is the inury to Florida WR Andre Debose who may require surgery.  Given the depth at RB, U-Sports can deal for a playmaking Wideout.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.7 GPA.  U-Sports is the favorite because any time you can throw Tebow, MiQuale Lewis, Clay and Rodgers out on the field for your team, to go along with an Alabama Defense and Avery, you have a shot to win and this team seems loaded.

#2 College Football Geek-Todd DeVries

Best Pick: Austin Davis of Southern Miss is a great pick in the 7th round.  If DeAndre Brown is healthy and Damion Fletcher stays on the field, Davis’ offense will rack up a ton of points and he will be a fantasy stud.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: David Wilson in the 12th round was a pick that may be looked at later as questionable if he is not named the Hokies starter at Running Back.  There were plenty of starters available, yet CFG took the risk on Wilson.

Strength: Running Back is a position this team has locked down.  Andre Anderson, Toby Gerhart, and Jake Sharp are all studs, and if Wilson can develop as the lead back for the Hokies, he will have four backs rush for 1,000 yards.

Weakness: The starters are solid for CFG, but the bench worries us.  None are gamebreaking targets or backs, however Jermaine Gresham nullifies the lack of playmaking Wide Receivers.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.6 GPA.  College Football Geek has a solid squad and is a true contender.  Anderson, Gresham, Gerhart and Carrier should be point machines, while the health of his best weapon is the key for Austin Davis.

#3 Athlon Sports-Steven Lassan

Best Pick: Max Hall in the 10th round is an absolute steal.  Hall not only can be used as a piece in a future trade, he is a solid compliment to Dan LeFevour.  With Dennis Pitta and most of his weapons outside Austin Collie back, Hall will be a monster.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: After selecting LeFevour and Hall, to reach for Tony Pike in the 13th was not necessary and they could have taken a third Quarterback later.

Strength: Without a doubt Quarterback is this teams strength.  LeFevour is a dual threat weapon while Hall is a 30 TD lock.  Plus, Pike can step in if necessary and Marty Gilyard, can provide solid numbers against weaker Big East defenses and Omar Clayton, the UNLV signal caller, was added to the roster post draft replacing WR Darrius Danks.

Weakness: The receiving group needs a big threat and Athlon is banking on Jeff Moturi return to his 2007 form.  Edwards is intriguing as a Houston wideout, however Young, and Fuller can all be hit or miss.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.5 GPA.  The quarterback position can put up 25 points every week.  Plus the combination of Jarvis and Fletcher is good for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns every week.  Not to mention having the 2nd best Tight End goes a long way to having the leagues best team.  This is a lock playoff team.

#4 Fanball-Jason Collette

Best Pick: Although it was early the combination of Jonathan Dwyer and LaGarrette Blount gives Fanball the best RB combo in the league.  Thus, the 2nd round pick to secure Dwyer is the key, as getting two potential Heisman candidates is impressive.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Dexter McCluster in the fourth round is a stretch.  In a BCS only league it is fine, but with players like Stephen Williams of Toledo, Kris Adams of UTEP, Cortez Gent of FIU, and Naaman Roosevelt of Buffalo available, it was too early.

Strength: The best team in the league in terms of Running Backs.  Not only do Dwyer and Blount get a ton of points, Matt Asiata and Phillip Tanner are solid backups.

Weakness: Outside of Emmanuel Sanders of SMU, the receiving group has some holes and question marks.  They can be special, but McCluster will have some quiet weeks in the SEC, while Salas is no sure thing in the Hawaii spread attack.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.4 GPA.  This team has some high scoring options and if Vittatoe can pass it like he can and the Boise State defense dominates the conference like it is capable of, this team can also contend for the top spot.

#5 CBS Sports-Michael Hurcomb

Best Pick: DeAndre Brown is one of the top three receivers in the nation and in fantasy.  There is no reason, given the Southern Miss medical report stating he would be ready, that he should fall to the 3rd round.  A fantastic snag by the CBS Sports crew.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Unless your starting Tight End is on a bye and you have one like Cody Slate to start, there is no need to use a second pick on a Tight End and they did in the 14th.

Strength: Balance is this teams strength.  Good at QB with Kaepernick, good at RB with Unga, awesome at WR with Brown, this team has studs everywhere.

Weakness: The 2nd player at each position is a weakness.  Mathews is coming off a down year for Fresno State, while Decker battled some injuries at Minnesota in 2008.  This can turn into a major swing the other way if they return to their previous form.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.3.  This team is a bubble team for the playoffs who has enough fire power to win every week, yet because of a lack of depth, can lose close in other weeks, thus frustrating the guys at CBS Sports.

#6 Sporting News-Matt McKenzie

Best Pick: Jimmy Clausen in the 10th round was a solid pick.  Clausen will air it out all day and night for the Irish and can not only be used as trade bait, he can also step in depending on the matchup if Bradford plays against a tough defense.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: When you are not the unquestioned starter at Running Back for your team, you cannot be taken in the 3rd round.  Chris Brown is good, but not worthy of a pick ahead of Daniel Porter, Toby Gerhart or Noel Devine.

Strength: While Brown was a questionable 3rd round pick, the depth at RB is great for the Sporting News team.  Rodgers, Brown, Michael Smith, Jermain Thomas and Joe McKnight are solid.

Weakness: When you do not have clear starters at certain positions, your team suffers.  While Roosevelt will start every week, it is a game of matchups with Bryan Anderson, Austin Pettis, Dion Morton, and the rest.  Often times you make a good call.  Other times you swing and miss.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.28 GPA.  Another bubble playoff team which needs a lot of development from their receivers to challenge for the top spot.  Bradford and Rodgers are point machines, however any Oklahoma TD scored by DeMarco Murray on the ground kills this team.

#7 Sports Overload No Mercy-Ron Jumper

Best Pick: Any time you can draft the best player at their position, it is a good pick.  That is why their best pick is case Keenum, who was taken #1 overall.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: While the team has amazing talent at QB with Keenum and Tim Hiller, drafting Russell Wilson in the 14th round was not necessary.

Strength: Quarterback is an immense strength.  Keenum can approach 50 touchdown passes while Hiller can throw for 4,000 yards and 30+ scores.  That’s production.  And for a bye week fill in, Russell Wilson was added off the waiver wire.

Weakness: Despite Marty Gilyard being a solid receiver, he does not have much help on this team.  Brandon Banks will be hurt by Josh Freeman entering the NFL while LaFell, Young, and Hodge do not play in high octane passing offenses.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.27 GPA.  This team will win plenty of games because of Keenum, Royster, and Taua, however will struggle when their receivers face tough secondaries.  This team will battle till the end to get in the playoff field.

#8 Fantasy College Blitz-Drew Smith

Best Pick: With the loss of James Starks to injury, drafting Kendall Hunter as the #1 back for this team was key and extremely important.  Getting him 12th overall is quite impressive as well.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: You cannot count Starks who was subsequently lost for the season due to an injury which ended his college career.  So lets go with Mckay Jacobson, who needs to step into the shoes left by Austin Collie and become a solid compliment to Dennis Pitta.

Strength: Quarterback is a strength for the Fantasy College Blitz team because against weak defenses Juice Williams can be a star, while Masoli is a must start every week.  Then grabbing Jarrett Brown late, who you can matchup against weak Big East teams is a solid snag.

Weakness: The lack of a major second back due to the injury to Starks kills this team.  If healthy, this is a top four team.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.25 GPA.  This team for now is incomplete.  They will be relying on the Illinois offense with Benn and Juice and they must struggle to find a back to replace the production a 2nd round pick like Starks would have given them.  Starks was dropped post draft for his backup and now starter Brandon Thermilus, while Zac Brown, who appears to be atop the Wisconsin depth chart at RB, was also added to the mix.  If one of them can step up and replace Starks’ value, this team will be right in the thick of things.

#9 Rotowire-Jeff Erickson

Best Pick: Todd Reesing is a lock for 3,500 yards and 30 TD.  6th round pick, sure they will take it.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Damaris Johnson is a talented wideout who will score plenty in 2009 with Brennan Marion now gone, however in PPR leagues, there are better options then taking him in the 3rd round.

Strength: The receiving group as a whole however is a great group with Briscoe, Johnson, Hilton, and Barnes.

Weakness: Outside of Jahvid Best and DuJuan Harris, the rushers are weak.  Scott needs to become the man for Maryland, while Turner can make more of an impact for TCU

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.22 GPA.  Reesing, Best and Briscoe are weekly huge scorers in every format.  Johnson will have 2 TD games a few times in 2009, while Graham is a solid Tight End.  This team is a fringe playoff contender, who will need monster years from the Kansas duo.

#10 CFFinsider-Jim Belanger

Best Pick: Kellen Moore is going to make a lot of owners very upset they ignored him in 2009.  There is no way Ryan Mallett and a handful of others will pass Moore’s numbers, especially considering the passing game will be relied on more with the departure of Ian Johnson.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: There is no need to take a kicker in fantasy football until the last round.  The difference is minimal, especially in college where in any given weak there are 30 kickers who can have huge days.  So taking Sam Glusman of Troy in the 13th was not necessary.

Strength: Potts, Moore, and Kinne of Tulsa are three high octane Quarterbacks and that is a solid compliment of big arms to put on the field.

Weakness: Rob Gronkowski may miss the opener and is questionable for Week Two.  While the quarterbacks are solid, Justin Shipley is the only home run threat at receiver, so maybe a deal can be worked out for one, while dealing a QB.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.20 GPA.  The QB’s are solid and Shipley is a fantasy stud, but having Porter as the top back and some of the hit or miss receivers are too worrisome to us.

#11 Football Outsiders-Bill Connelly

Best Pick: Blaine Gabbert is a sleeper Quarterback who has the potential to be a monster in the Missouri offense.  He enters a great situation and can be a serious fantasy asset.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Ryan Broyles is the Oklahoma receiver you need to own.  Just not in the 3rd round.

Strength: A combo of Zac Robinson and Gabbert gives F.O. two of the best quarterbacks in the high octane Big 12, however the addition of Matt Grothe, the dual threat QB of South Florida after the draft, gives this team another option in case Gabbert struggles.

Weakness: Drafting Broyles, Green, and Collins may be good in a BCS only league, however when every conference is up for grabs, there are better, more consistent and predictable scorers then those three.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.17 GPA.  Robinson and Scott can put up 50 points by themselves every week.  The rest of the lineup is full of question marks and unless Demps becomes the next Percy Harvin, this team will struggle to make the playoffs.

#12 Mock Draft Central-Geoffrey Stein

Best Pick: Again, anytime you can snag the unquestionable best player at their position, that is your best pick.  Enter Dez Bryant as the 4th overall and #1 pick by Mock Draft Central.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Brandon Minor is a talented back, but one that is playing in a rebuilding offense with a likely freshman Quarterback.  Would much rather go with a sure thing in an early round like the 7th.

Strength: The receivers are solid.  Bryant, Brown, Nunez, and Britton are a solid foursome and if Deonte Thompson can become the next Percy Harvin, this group can be explosive.

Weakness: There is not one dominant #1 rusher.  Lippincott could be that, but his backfield is overcrowded.  Ingram, Devine, Minor and Finley are all capable of huge afternoons, but not one of them is a scary fantasy opponent and are better real life backs then fantasy options.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.10 GPA.  The rushing group can have big days against weak opponents.  Yet the majority of Big 10 games for Minor and SEC games for Alabama will be against bigger, faster defenses.  And while Robert Griffin is talented, he is still only a sophomore and considering this teams backup is Daryll Clark, they will need some big breaks to get in the playoff hunt.

#13 Open Sports-Daniel E. Dobish

Best Pick: Rusty Smith had a down year for FIU in 2008, however to go in the 11th round was way too late and provides a solid #3 Quarterback and eventual trade chip for Open Sports.

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: No need to stretch for Tight End unless you get one of the top three, thus selecting Jamari Grant in the 7th round was a reach.

Strength: If DeMarco Murray can stay healthy, pairing him with Spiller, Arnold, and Simpson will be a potent and productive group.

Weakness: This team lacks a huge playmaking receiver.  Cortez Gent, along with Rusty Smith had a subpar 2008, while Julio Jones is a better pro prospect then fantasy receiver because of the offense he plays in.

Final Grade & Outlook: 3.05 GPA.  This team was drafted more for a pro team then college fantasy team.  Jones, the USC defense, and Ausberry are solid pro prospects, but were selected very early.  Not to mention Holliday, Herron, and Dixon are borderline fantasy options at best.

14. Rotoworld-Brian Brown

Best Pick: I, like Rotoworld believe that Kevin Jurovich is going to come back in a big way following last seasons battle with mononucleosis.  Taking him in the 10th round was a steal

Player that Could Have been Picked Later: Ryan Mallett in the 9th round was a bit early considering some of the defenses he will be playing against and the lack of receiving talent he plays with.

Strength: Aldrick Robinson, Detron Lewis, Jurovich and Singleton provides Rotoworld with four potential 1,000 yard receivers.

Weakness: Bo Levi Mitchell has the weapons to be a phenomenal quarterback, however he is no sure thing.  Neither is Mallett or Rotoworld’s other QB Jacob Bower, who most reports say will be backing up Kinne to start the season at Tulsa.

Final Grade & Outlook: 2.95 GPA.  Solid receivers, great top running back, but plenty of question marks, especially at QB and RB after Beall.  Batch is not 100% healthy and how much will Jamad Williams get the ball in the Tulsa scheme?  This team is ok and has the potential to be better, but is not a playoff
