CFB Expert League Report Week 3

September 22nd, 2009 by Adam Mankuta

EricDecker-1Game 1 Recap: CBS Sports (3-0) def. Fantasy College Blitz (2-1) 96.28-85.42

Best Player: The keys to this game were Eric Decker (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) and McKay Jacobson.  The two wide receivers each performed up to their capabilities; albeit in losing efforts for their own teams in must win home games.  Jacobson has become a very solid option for Max Hall at BYU, while Decker continues to dominate opposing secondaries.

Disappointing Player: Tate Forcier laid an egg for FCB in week three and it coming against Eastern Michigan is very disappointing.  DeAndre Brown continues to be a huge let down for CBS and that performance came in a game in which Southern Miss put up 37 points in a win against Virginia.

Who to Watch for Week 4: The key for CBS going forward may be the health of Decker, who injured himself in the last drive against California.  Losing him would be a big blow to a 3-0 team.  For FCB, the injury to Michael Floyd is crushing.  He was enjoying a breakout 2009 and was dominant on the field.  Being lost for the year is a huge void in the WR spot for FCB.

Game 2 Recap:  CFF Insider (1-2) def. Athlon Sports (1-2) 116.40 to 114.38

Best Player: This close matchup was won by Taylor Potts and his second half performance against Texas.  After doing nearly nothing in the first half, Potts brought his team within a touchdown for much of the second half and showed he is a fantasy star on the rise.  Damion Fletcher almost led Athlon to victory as he dominated Virginia.  If DeAndre Brown continues to be a non-factor for Southern Miss, watch Fletcher have a sensational 2009 season.

Disappointing Player: Daniel Porter, despite scoring for La. Tech, only gained 34 yards for CFF Insider, while Jeff Fuller only contributed a few receptions before leaving with an injury.  That injury and missing production from the rest of the game cost Athlon this matchup.

Who to Watch for Week 4: The key for CFF Insider is to see where Potts goes from here.  He should have renewed confidence that he can perform anywhere and at anytime.  Watch out for massive numbers the rest of the way.  For Athlon, the injury to Fuller is a huge blow because as of this article, there is no timetable for his return; another huge WR void in this league left by injury.

Game 3 Recap: Sports Overload (3-0) def. Rotoworld (0-3) 115.0 to 84.86

Best Player: Tim Hiller finally showed Sports Overload what he is capable of with a 20+ point performance, while Rotoworld got another gunslinging performance from Bo Levi Mitchell.  Unfortunately for Rotoworld, much like SMU, Mitchell’s interceptions hurt them just as much as his TD’s helped them.

Disappointing Player: In a shootout against West Virginia, McCalebb was very disappointing for Auburn, while Aldrick Robinson, Bo Levi Mitchell’s 2nd favorite target was held in check while Emannuel Sanders had a performance for the ages.  Robinson must work with Mitchell to develop more chemistry, however he remains a must start in all formats.

Who to Watch for Week 4: As mentioned just a second ago, Robinson needs to establish himself as the true second option for Mitchell.  While Bo’s numbers are solid in yardage and TD’s, a continued develop with his talent will drastically decrease the interceptions.  For 0-3 Rotoworld, it may be time to trade some of their better players in order to find depth.  Maybe an Evan Royster can land them a playmaking wideout.

Game 4 Recap: Rotowire (3-0) def. U-Sports 177.72 to 68.50

Best Player: Rotowire had a ton of fantastic performances in week three, but the most impressive was Jahvid Best who clearly is the Heisman frontrunner, as he scored five times against Minnesota.  James Rodgers kept Oregon State close against Cincy, however U-Sports needed a ton more to stay close.

Disappointing Player: Despite his impressive 14 catches per game average, Freddie Barnes needs to get in the end zone for Rotowire.  Yes they scored 177 points, but one of these days they will need the extra TD points.  Tim Tebow, coming off a Heisman-esque performance, was primed for an encore when Tennessee came calling and all we heard was that they were going to try and score 100.  Well they didn’t and Tebow didn’t have a great week.

Who to Watch for Week 4: Tebow takes his act to Kentucky, which just watched Louisville score 27 points on them.  Can Tebow hit 50?  And for Rotowire, can the trip of Todd Reesing, Jahvid Best and Darius Marshall continue to dominate the league?

Game 5 Recap: Sporting News (2-1) def. Open Sports (0-3) 126.66 to 89.50

Best Player: Finally the USF defense stepped up to the plate and shut out Charleston Southern.  Open Sports was led by DeMarco Murray, but in any 30+ point loss, they needed a lot more help.

Disappointing Player: Austin Pettis only scored 9.40 points for Boise State Friday night in a game that went back and forth.  For Open Sports, it was Colt McCoy that did not provide the stats, as he watched the running game take over and lead the Longhorns to the win over Texas Tech.

Who to Watch for Week 4: Both of these teams face QB issues going into next week.  For the Sporting News, how will Jimmy Clausen handle not having his best target Michael Floyd for the rest of the year? Meanwhile, Open Sports must watch closely to see how Colt McCoy overcomes his mediocre performance, which did come while he was battling the flu.

Game 6 Recap: College Football Geek (3-0) def. Fanball (1-2) 138.38 to 98.18

Best Player: In this blowout, CFG was led by Johnson, who dominated the field and helped this easy win, while Fanball was led by Toney Baker, who scores a few times for NC State and may be on his way to becoming the lead back of the Wolfpack.

Disappointing Player: Jake Sharp was a huge let down for CFG but that was largely because of his injury, but with Todd Reesing airing it out all over the field, Sharp needs to get back on the field to reclaim his role.  Fanball was let down by Jonathan Dwyer, who like most of his Yellow Jacket teammates did not show up against Miami in their blowout loss.

Who to Watch for Week 4: The injuries to both Sharp and Dwyer are key for these two teams.  Both backs are capable of mammoth production and losing either one can swing the team’s season.  This looks like a bigger deal for CFG given their 3-0 start.

Game 7 Recap: Football Outsiders (2-1) def. Mock Draft Central (0-3) 127.54 to 126.88

Best Player: The Outsiders were led by Blaine Gabbert, who continues to impress while taking over the reign from Chase Daniel.  Gabbert has used all of his receivers and continues to be very impressive.  The MDC squad made this a nailbiter thanks to Mark Ingram, who was the best player on the field as Alabama notched another blowout win.

Disappointing Player: Jacoby Ford was slowed by the rain which almost cost the Outsiders the win, however the turning point player was Minor for Michigan and MDC who did not perform at all and watched Carlos Brown run wild against Eastern Michigan.

Who to Watch for Week 4: The Outsiders are rolling and their best player so far in 2009 is Ryan Broyles, who leads the nation in TD catches.  Can Broyles keep that performance up?  MDC needs to find a replacement for Tony Moeaki, who after a solid week one has done nothing and may be hurt more than he is leading on for Iowa.
