CFB Expert League: Week 6 Report
October 16th, 2009 by Adam Mankuta
Game 1 Recap: Sports Overload (5-1) def. FCB (2-4) 120.66 to 115.60
Best Player: The Overload express was led by Fantasy stud Case Keenum yet again. The Houston QB continues to light up scoreboards and leading all of his teams to victory. FCB kept it very close thanks to Ryan Williams (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI), who after beginning the season in a likely timeshare with David Wilson has emerged as a darkhorse Heisman finalist.
Disappointing Player: Simply put, Brandon LaFell is not a fantasy WR. He may have all the tools to be a solid receiver at the next level, however with a weak quarterback, against the nation’s top defense, he should not have been in the lineup. FCB would have won this week if not for the porous performance of the Georgia Tech defense, which saw FSU march up and down the field at will. A better defensive effort at FC B escapes with the win.
Who to Watch for Week 7: Can Evan Royster step up for Sports Overload? The preseason Heisman hopeful has had a quite go of it ever since PSU lost at home to Iowa. Can he rebound? For FCB, it is time for Mizzou WR Jared Perry to step up. Too many times in the Tigers home loss to Nebraska, Perry did not make a play he was capable of. He is explosive and talented, just time to put it together.
Game 2 Recap: CBS Sports (6-0) def. Open Sports (1-5) 146.64 to 129.10
Best Player: CBS’ team in 2009 is a powerhouse and this week it was led by Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick, who scored 5 touchdowns. Open Sports kept it close thanks to Anthony Dixon, who is quietly having a very solid and consistent season as a tailback in the SEC.
Disappointing Player: Eric Decker (CBS) and Julio Jones (Open Sports) were both huge WR disappointments last week. Decker is a week in, week out starter who fell flat, while Alabama’s talented receiver could not overcome the Ole Miss secondary; his team dominated the opposing offense.
Who to Watch for Week 7: Jones for that matter, much like LaFell, is a better pro prospect then a fantasy college receiver. Bama plays a pro style offense built around the ground game, so there is no spot for Jones on my roster. For CBS, the play of Cody Slate is important. In a down year for fantasy TE’s, any contribution, especially from one that you should be able to count on, is huge.
Game 3 Recap: Sporting News (3-3) def. CFFInsider (4-2) 146.06 to 132.34
Best Player: Sporting News was led by the awesome Big 12 receiving duo of Jordan Shipley and Kerry Meier, who roasted Colorado and Iowa State for huge numbers in receptions, yards and TD’s. Somehow, those two performances overshadowed the 4 TD effort of Jacquizz Rodgers, who almost single-handedly led CFFI to victory.
Disappointing Player: In a game that saw Buffalo throw 3 TD’s and score 40 points, Naaman Roosevelt’s 5 catch, 0 TD day ranks as a disappointment. Sporting News was able to hold on for victory despite their QB Chris Todd laying his first egg of the season in Auburn’s blowout loss to Arkansas.
Who to Watch for Week 7: How can CFFI replace Jacquizz Rodgers? Why he is not getting any attention from the Heisman pollers is appalling, considering the guy leads all RB’s with 13 rushing touchdowns while being 7th in the nation in rushing yardage. For Sporting News, they must be concerned that teams have figured out Todd and the Auburn offense. Is the bloom off the rose for the Tigers?
Game 4 Recap: Football Outsiders (3-3) def. Rotoworld (1-5) 104.76 to 79.10
Best Player: While Todd struggled for Auburn, RB Ben Tate exploded and led the Outsiders to victory thanks to a huge performance. Rotoworld, who has had a long season already, saw Aaron Opelt (the star QB from Toledo) suffer a shoulder injury in their blowout loss to Western Michigan.
Disappointing Player: Considering their talent, it is surprising that AJ Green of Georgia and Danarrio Alexander of Mizzou combined for 10 points, however the Outsiders won easily. Bryce Beall, who did score double digits, did not hit the end zone which resulted in a less then solid day for the Houston RB.
Who to Watch for Week 7: For the Outsiders, how will Zac Robinson deal long term with the loss of all everything WR Dez Bryant? His first week was a success, however on one of his TD’s the DB slipped, while the other was a sure INT that was dropped and bounced into his receiver’s hands. For Rotoworld, the key is Opelt. If he is hurt and gone for any length of time, the season is over.
Game 5 Recap: Rotowire (6-0) def. CFG (4-2) 183.68 to 142.20
Best Player: Rotowire’s team looks dominant and the team to beat. They amassed over 180 points thanks to Freddie Barnes, who alone caught 22 balls, for over 270 yards, and 3 scores. The guy is putting together the single best season from a receiver in the history of college football. CFG lost the battle of 1 loss teams but should not be ashamed with their solid performance, which was led by Steven Sheffield, the latest and greatest Texas Tech QB who threw 7 scores in the easy win.
Disappointing Player: Rotowire scored those 180+ points despite their TE Garrett Graham barely contributing. If he plays like he is capable and is not shut down by a solid LB corps like the one at OSU, Rotowire is a threat to put up 200 points every week. For CFG, Ed Dickson was a disappointment but that largely had to do with Nate Costa, not Jeremiah Masoli, playing QB for the Ducks.
Who to Watch for Week 7: Can Barnes keep it going? It would seem like he is in for another enormous day this week as the Eagles take on Ball State, a team that is 0-6. That 0-6 looks even worse when considering they have lost to the likes of North Texas, Army, Temple and NEW HAMPSHIRE. The key going forward for CFG is Sheffield and whether he is going to continue to be the Red Raiders QB. If so, he is the clear cut #1 waiver wire ad of the year and can lead this team a long way in the playoffs.
Game 6 Recap: MDC (2-4) def. U-Sports (1-5) 137.58 to 112.24
Best Player: In a battle of 1 win teams, Mock Draft Central took the lead early thanks to a dominant performance by the Northwestern defense against Miami of Ohio, while U-Sports kept it close thanks to Navy’s all-everything QB Ricky Dobbs.
Disappointing Player: While Colin Kaepernick stole the show for Nevada, Luke Lippincott continues to struggle to make strides as a consistent fantasy play. For U-Sports, Scotty McKnight, Colorado’s #1 weapon was shut down, as the Buffs offense struggled all day against Texas’ defense.
Who to Watch for Week 7: For MDC, the key will be to continue to play a solid game of defensive roulette. This week pick up Miami of Florida and watch them dominate UCF. For U-Sports the depth at WR going into James Rodgers’ bye is scary. He is the only clear weapon at the position; however, for a team at 1-5 it may not matter much at this point anyway.
Game 7 Recap: Athlon (3-3) def. FanBall (1-5) 159.92 to 99.16
Best Player: Athlon crushed FanBall this week thanks to a massive 6 TD effort from Dan Lefevour, who is showing everyone that 2008 was an aberration. FanBall got a nice performance from Jonathan Dwyer, but fell close to 60 points short.
Disappointing Player: Despite the 60 point win, Athlon was let down by Buckner of Texas, who did not get very involved in the Texas passing attack. FanBall has struggled all year, and Emmanuel Sanders, who came off a terrific 2008, is one of the reasons why. He was no different last week.
Who to Watch for Week 7: Just as MDC is playing defensive roulette, Athlon lucked out with a 3 TD effort from UNC. They too should snag a defense this week like Miami. For FanBall, the combination of Greg Salas, McCluster and Sanders has been inconsistent. It is time for them to step up or step out.
