CFFI’s All-FBS Expert Mock Draft – my All-Earth roster

August 4th, 2010 by Vince Mullins

One would think that after fifteen years of fantasy college football drafting that I would learn not to get excited about one of my drafts – such ambivalence has no place for me when reviewing my work from the #1 spot in Monday night’s College Fantasy Football Insider’s All-120 Expert Mock Draft.

Daniel Thomas takes to the air on a touchdown run.

Daniel Thomas learned quickly how to score TDs as RB. This as one of four against TAMU (Icon SMI)

Yes, I know there were only 11 owners drafting, making each a possible All-American squad. I just think mine is All-Earth. Maybe even add in Mars as it travels very closely to Earth this month.

I am sure that everyone thinks their team is best – after all, we aren’t playing out the season to prove it. Regardless, a look at the draft not only is instructive for whom was taken but also for who was not selected, suggesting big time value opportunities for your draft.

Only 30 days to kickoff, you know…time to load up with Cougars and Tigers, oh my!

After the jump, a round by round mind-stream of my draft, then I reinforce the FCB Cardinal Rule of Drafting QBs…

Standard scoring, lineup was 2QB, 3RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1K, 1D and 5 bench.

1st    1    Case Keenum    QB    HOU
I made this pick in 0.618 seconds, I am trying to clarify with Mock Draft Central if that is the all-time record. Consensus #1 overall second year running – time to get a beverage and wait. Dewar’s for this evening’s event.

22nd    2    Daniel Thomas    RB    KANS ST
Still learning the RB position, light defenses in the conference and a legit 1500-15 candidate.

23rd    3    Ryan Broyles    WR    OK
I remember debating selecting Kendall Hunter of Oklahoma State, but thought that a chance at perhaps the top WR at #23 was too good to pass up. Plus, with only 11 teams perhaps Hunter would fall.

44    4    James Rodgers    WR    ORE ST
Not so fast my friends…Geek’s Todd DeVries grabs him with wily aplomb. I was hoping for Eric Page, but CBS Mike Hurcomb jumps on the MAC stud. No worries as I get Quiz’s older brother who gets touches on fly sweeps and pass routes also – great for PPR leagues (although this one was not).

45    5    Bryce Beall    RB    HOU
I will try to find some older research about the QB-RB hedge and how it leads to a less volatile roster on the NFL side, but with the suspension of Charles Sims I really like a return to 2008 form for Beall.

66    6    Cameron Newton    QB    AUB
Normally I would recite the Fantasy College Blitz Commandment to not overdraft a QB, but my gut says that Newton will be like the Rosetta Stone for the Gus Malzahn offense – he will unlock all the secrets of the offense and achieve outrageous stats. I am on record that I expect Tebow like stats for Newton. PS – If Dan hadn’t grabbed Sam McGuffie, i would have been all over the YouTube sensation.

67    7    Derrick Washington    RB    MO
Rock solid RB in a great spread offensive system.

88    8    Greg Childs    WR    ARK
Love this Hog as a WR3 – Razorback offense is looking great for 2010 and Childs fills the template of the XL-size WR that usually hovers at the top of the national standings.

89    9    Evan Royster    RB    PENN ST
I think Royster is severely undervalued for 2010, and I have seen this in most mock drafts. With a new QB and a tradition of strong lineman make me want to draft a guy who passed up the NFL Draft – I expect more than the 6 TD of 2009.

110    10    Wes Kemp    WR    MO
My pick for the #1 producer for the Tigers in 2010 wideout unit, has the size and speed that NFL scouts love and Gabbert should feed him often. Earlier in Round ten, Athlon’s Steve Lassan began his draft terrorism of “circle blocks the square” by picking Toledo RB Morgan Williams ahead of me. That kid is good…

111    11    Darvin Adams    WR    AUB
The younger of the up and coming Tiger WR corps, both he and Terrell Zachery possess plus size and one must love the system and eight home games.

132    12    Mario Fannin    RB    AUB
See above…I do not expect Ben Tate production but a great all-around RB/WR threat. Read his quotes in the Sporting News preview, this is a guy we should root for with a great leadership skill set.

133    13    Mike McNeill    TE    NEB
Begin the discussion about whether McNeil will be rostered as a TE or a WR.  Officially on the Husker site he is WR, but for now he fits here. I had Gator WR Deonte Thompson loaded up on the Prepick, thereby tempting the draft gods and I was smote.

154    14    Oregon Ducks    DEF    ORE
I cannot remember a better mix of East-Coast-bias-and-easy-early-schedule than the 2010 Ducks defense. New Mexico, @Tennessee, Portland State and @Arizona State is a stress-free way to start your fantasy season. And Lassan took WR Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina ahead of me so I again step on the Ducks.

155    15    Alan Gendreau    K    MD TN ST
Nice season as a 2009 soph Blue Raider, could be better with what Phil Steele calls the easiest schedule in college football.

176    16    B.J. Daniels    QB    S FLA
Mr. Irrelevant ne plus ultra. The best “backyard QB” in the nation finishes off the draft in style.

Now, some players of interest to me who went undrafted – remember what we say about overvaluing QBs? Look who lasted 176 picks…

Matt Barkley – USC
Garrett Gilbert – Texas
Andy Dalton – TCU
Jacory Harris – Miami

Here is your takeaway – If you are in an all-FBS league with 14 owners or less, you could get three legitimate Heisman Trophy candidates at QB after the 14th round!

While Heisman hype does not equal fantasy production, hard to argue that any of those guys would be a great start to the season whom you easily cut to get a more opportunistic pick.

And if you prefer running TDs, Josh Nesbitt stands as a free agent. Another proven fantasy stud was not selected – UTEP Trevor Vittatoe. You get the idea.

For instance, in this very draft, I could have gone Quiz #1 overall and Baron Batch/TY Hilton in the 7th rather than Newton (I do wonder how far he could have fallen…).

This is no commentary on the experts in this draft – it is just a structural difference in college fantasy versus NFL fantasy. Understand this, and you will prosper in your 2010 drafts like I feel I did in my Mock Draft.
