CONFERENCE USA 2008 ALL-FANTASY TEAM
December 10th, 2008 by Daniel Freer
In 2007, it was the running back who dominated Conference USA…players like UCF RB Kevin Smith, Tulane RB Matt Forte, and East Carolina RB Chris Johnson…all who are now starting for their NFL teams.
In 2008, quarterbacks dominated the conference…players like Houston QB Case Keenum, Tulsa QB David Johnson, and UTEP QB Trevor Vittatoe…were consistent fantasy producers for most of the season.
But, no QB in Conference USA this season produced more than Rice QB Chase Clement (photo, thanks IconSMI) our Fantasy College Blitz: Conference USA Fantasy Player of the Year.
The senior from Alamo Heights, TX, was one of the top fantasy players in all of college football, throwing for over 3400 yards and 36 TDs, while rushing for nearly 600 yards and 10 TDs (through November 22nd games). Clement led the Owls to a 9-3 overall/7-1 conference record…one of the most successful seasons in Rice football history.
Joining Clement on the CUSA 2008 All-Fantasy Team are
(Note: Statistics quoted are through November 22nd games)
QUARTERBACK:
CHASE CLEMENT – Rice: (see above)
RUNNING BACKS:
BRYCE BEALL – Houston: Replacing another great CUSA RB from 2007, Anthony Aldridge, Beall rushed for just over 1000 yards and 11 TDs, while hauling in nearly 400 yards and 4 TDs receiving.
DAMION FLETCHER – Southern Mississippi: Three seasons…three seasons over 1000 yards rushing…and had over 300 yards receiving in 2008 for the bowl-eligible Golden Eagles.
ANDRE ANDERSON – Tulane: Replacing Matt Forte was no easy task, and Anderson responded with nearly 900 yards rushing and 7 TDs…and adding 202 yards receiving for the Green Wave.
RECEIVERS:
JARETT DILLARD – Rice: The NCAA’s all-time TD reception leader…and, with QB Clement, the greatest QB-WR-TD hook-up in NCAA history. Caught 19 TD passes in 2008. With the Owls upcoming Texas Bowl matchup vs Western Michigan, Dillard could put those NCAA records out of reach.
JAMES CASEY – Rice: This TE is possibly the best overall athlete in college football. Had over 1000 yards and 9 TDs receiving, rushed for 5 TDs, played some QB…and can throw a baseball 95 MPH.
DeANDRE BROWN – Southern Mississippi: This true freshman lived up to all his accolades as the season progressed…with over 1000 yards receiving and 12 TD catches.
KICKER:
JOSE MARTINEZ – UTEP: One of the few kickers who scored over 100 points this season…and his 64-yard FG against UCF was probably the most exciting play this writer witnessed, in person, this season. If your favorite NFL team needs a kicker…Martinez is your man. Dude has leg.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:
UCF: The Knights defense and special teams shined as their offense tanked, and CB/KR/PR Joe Burnett was UCFs best scoring threat…even though he did not play a single-down of offense.
