Feast or Famine: I Prefer Eggrolls
By John Huss | September 22, 2008
Vince has started a nice series called the Saturday Morning Breakfast Burrito. It compiles the main points from the week into one easy resource for those doing last second research. Since my article comes out midweek and in the evening, should I call mine the Late Night Eggroll based on my inclination for Asian flair? Taking it another step, since my article tonight is going to be a hodge podge of points, is it the Fantasy College Blitz version of Dim Sum??? All I know is that I’m getting hungry now and the sooner I get this article to you, the sooner I can snack and watch the season premiere of Heroes. Don’t let me down NBC….
Quick hits from the Blitz Index combined with a little extra support from our buddies at U-Sports:
WR Jacoby Ford , Clemson - Ford (left, Icon SMI) is held by 39% of those playing in a U-Sports league. This weekend, Clemson goes up against a Maryland team giving up 279 ypg. Aaron Kelly is the more widely held name but Ford is the one putting up the stats. He’s worth a look this weekend.
WR Jeremy Williams , Tulane - Former Hawaii coach June Jones may have brought his offense to SMU, but he hasn’t found the time to let his defense know they have a game to play also. Williams is held in 29% of U-Sports leagues but looks like a definite person to consider as a spot start for this week. SMU is giving up over 300 ypg and almost 46 ppg.
WR Earnest Jackson , Buffalo - The obvious play is to go heavy on Central Michigan players as they face Buffalo this week. Buffalo gives up yards and points but so does CMU. Jackson is only held in 14% of leagues and one thing to point out is that he didn’t play in the first game of the season. He is the second option on this team but despite that, he has just as many TDs as the more widely held Naaman Roosevelt. He is not only worth a spot start, he might just be worth owning outright.
WR Phillip Payne , UNLV (owned in 12% of U-Sports leagues) and WR Casey Flair , UNLV (< 10% in U-Sports leagues) - Nevada’s D is giving up 347 ypg and 39 ppg while UNLV is compiling 209 yards and about 2.25 TDs thru the air per game. Payne has 5 TDs in 4 games and offers a nice target standing at 6′3″. Flair has actually gotten more touches and yards and this game might be the one where he gets the scores to go with it.
Quick hits of the Vegas variety:
Every week, Vegas does this little thing where they establish what they feel with be the total points scored in any particular NCAAF game. This provides for great conversation around the water cooler at the office or even gives you a way to do a little wagering if you were at a Vegas sportsbook (because shame on you, to wager anywhere else is deemed illegal). I’ve mentioned last year that looking at those totals can help give you guidance on who to start. If you are faced with a toss up on who to play, don’t simply flip a coin. Besides looking at the Blitz Index, look at the predicted total of the games in which they’ll play. If it really is a 50/50 scenario, lean towards the guy playing in the game with the higher predicted score. Vegas is very accurate in setting that number. One caveat…totals have been coming out late in the week this season so it does make it more difficult to use this as a guide. Its also the reason I’m not able to reference any games for your consideration. Where’s a good ole fashion bookie when you need one???
Quick reminder about your roster:
In our preseason Coaches Playbook, one of our articles mentioned eventually trading into a position of strength. With about 40% of your games under your belt, now is the time to consider trading some depth to improve your starting lineup. This is especially true if you are sitting with a record of 2-2 or 1-3. You need to be aggressive to give yourself a legit chance at the playoffs.
There are certain players that you have on your roster that we would consider Permastarters. No matter the matchup, they need to play. Those that aren’t, try to package them up to some owner willing to part with a guy you covet. Go for a 2 for 1 and worry about the empty spot on your roster later. After all, that’s what the Blitz index and this very article are intended to accomplish.
