Feast or Famine: Where Did That Come From?
September 6th, 2010 by Adam Mankuta
Every year during the first week of the season players emerge that have never been heard of before. This article will praise a few of those players that had their coming out parties during the first week of the 2010 season.
Virgil Green, Nevada, Tight End
Finding a reliable fantasy Tight End is always challenging. Well look no further then Nevada’s Green, who blew up for seven catches, well over a 100 yards and two scores in the opener. He was clearly Colin Kaepernick’s favorite target and should be considered an every week starter going forward. The pistol offense the Wolfpack run is potent and Green will be a huge weapon for the passing game.
Lyle Leong, Texas Tech, Wide Receiver
Some owners wondered whether the Tommy Tuberville era would result in more of a balanced attack for the Red Raiders. Not so much. Leong led the way in a shootout against SMU, hauling in 11 balls with three of them going for touchdowns. We should have seen this coming however, as Leong’s high school teammate and QB was…starting Red Raiders QB, Taylor Potts. Leong should be a steady WR2 all season.
Montee Ball, Wisconsin, Running Back
The groaning you may be hearing is that of John Clay owners (myself included). The talented Wisconsin Heisman trophy candidate saw a handful of his carries, including two potential touchdowns vultured by his talented and quick backup. Ball showed great quickness against UNLV and proved to be a solid handcuff for any Clay owners. Given Wisconsin’s imposing offensive line, Ball may be in for some games against lesser opponents in 2010.
Dominique Davis, East Carolina, Quarterback
Davis led the most exciting finish of the weekend as the Pirates executed a perfect hail mary to defeat Tulsa at the final whistle. But Davis; performance was amazing, as he debuted with the Pirates by throwing for five touchdowns, rushing for another, and throwing for 380+ yards. A true breakout performance, Davis already is the best quarterback to come from ECU since David Garrard and considering the lack of defense played in Conference USA, he may be in for a massive season.
Jerry Davis, Buffalo, Quarterback
With Turner Gill in Kansas and James Starks in the NFL, the torch of the Buffalo offense has been passed to Davis, who threw the ball 35 times in the Bulls opener, which also happened to be a 31-0 win against Rhode Island. Considering the Bulls will be in plenty of shootouts, Davis will air it out plenty in 2010. Despite only 21 completions, he threw for over 300 yards and threw three touchdown passes. So if you need a matchup play at Quarterback, you could do a lot worse then Davis.
Other Names to Consider
Spencer Keith, Quarterback, Kent State
