FROM THE SHOTGUN (Week Five Prime Time/Pine-Time QBs)
September 22nd, 2008 by Daniel Freer
For realz…
Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor (pictured, thanks IconSMI) may not have secured a Heisman Trophy in his first collegiate start, but, his 4 TD performance against giant-killer Troy is a positive development for the Buckeyes…and you fantasy owners who took a flyer on him in your drafts.
Which is why your humble prognosticator says “Prime-Time” for the true-frosh this week when the Bucks go Script Ohio on the Minnesota Gophers.
Also, Pryor is one of the best fantasy bets this weekend, as many of the top QBs are taking the weekend off (remember most schools this season will have two off-weeks)
“STRIKE UP THE BAND” PRIME-TIME QB THIS WEEK
COLIN KAEPERNICK (Nevada) and OMAR CLAYTON (UNLV): A rivalry game under the radar nationally, but, a real snot-fest inside the Silver State…think of Auburn-Alabama hate-ness…with sports books nearby. Kaepernick is always a good play against equal competition, while Clayton has come around to become a threat both on the ground and in the air.
CHASE CLEMENT (Rice) and GIOVANNI VIZZA (North Texas): A team Rice should handle with no problem, as UNT struggles to stop anyone, while Vizza finally gets to face a defense he should be able to produce against. One of the 4+ hour games the diehards love.
DAN LeFEVOUR (Central Michigan) and DREW WILLY (Buffalo): This game will be competitive, and both QBs will have an easier go of it this week after facing decent BCS-level competition. LeFevour is already familiar with the fantasy world, but, Willy has developed into a good QB, and played competitively at Missouri last week.
NATE DAVIS (Ball State) at Kent State: Lots of emotion from the Cardinals will be expected after star WR Dante Love suffered a career-ending neck injury last weekend at Indiana (Love does have movement in arms and legs, after most recent report). After the loss of Love early vs the Hoosiers, BSU still managed to rout Indiana…so on the field the Cardinals will remain a dangerous team.
JAKE LOCKER (Washington) vs Stanford: Look for Locker this week to finally get some numbers as the Huskies face Stanford, a slight reprieve from UW’s early brutal schedule.
OTHER PRIME-TIME QBs: CURTIS PAINTER, Purdue; JOSH FREEMAN, Kansas State; MARK SANCHEZ, USC; BRIAN JOHNSON, Utah; DAVID JOHNSON, Tulsa; PAT WHITE, West Virginia; TIM HILLER, Western Michigan
THE “DON’T DOT THE ‘I’” MAYBE QBs THIS WEEK
ADAM WEBER (Minnesota) at Ohio State: Probably one of the few weeks not to play Weber this season. Although Minny shares kind of the same colors as USC, they are not the Trojans. Weber could get grilled this week in Columbus.
ZAC ROBINSON (Oklahoma State) vs Troy: Not saying this because Troy stomped on the Cowboys last season, but, the Pokes have a good running game and will probably revert to that against the pesky Trojans. One of those possible “land-mine” games for a BCS school this week.
SAM BRADFORD (Oklahoma) vs TCU: Oklahoma is the favorite in this, but TCU plays good defense, and wants to keep their national ranking cred as long as possible. Look for the Sooners to go ground to beat the Horned Frogs.
CASE KEENUM (Houston) and PATRICK PINKNEY (East Carolina): Keenum may not put up the passing numbers he normally does, and you have to wonder how Houston could lose at Colorado State last week. ECU and Pinkney will be smarting after the stunner loss at NC State last week.
THE “GET THE BAND OFF THE FIELD” PINE-TIME:
BO LEVI MITCHELL (SMU) at Tulane: The true-frosh Mustang QB may face one of the best defenses he has seen this year, as the TU Green Wave D shut down Alabama and kept East Carolina in check…not easy to do.
JOSEPH WEBB (UAB) at South Carolina: Not a great fantasy situation for the Blazer QB, as the Gamecocks have to rely on defense to win games. I bet The Ol’ Ball Coach would prefer Webb over the QBs he has on his Carolina roster, though.
KAIPO-NOA KAHEAKU-ENHADA/JARROD BRYANT (Navy) at Wake Forest: The WFU Demon Deacons have one of the best defenses in America, and this is one week not to play any of the Middies QBs.
NOTABLES OFF THIS WEEK:
GRAHAM HARRELL, Texas Tech; CHASE DANIEL, Missouri; COLT McCOY, Texas; ROBERT GRIFFIN, Baylor; TODD REESING, Kansas; MAX HALL, BYU; KELLEN MOORE, Boise State; WILLIE TUITAMA, Arizona; RUDY CARPENTER, Arizona State; JOSH NESBITT, Georgia Tech
