FROM THE SHOTGUN…Week Seven Prime-Time/Pine-Time (And Mid-Season Review)

So…how are we doing?
With just over half of the 2008 season complete, the Home Office of Fantasy College Blitz wanted the writers to evaluate how well some of our pre-season projections panned out.
Some were quite good, like Rice QB Chase Clement (pictured, thanks IconSMI), who even in lopsided losses found ways to produce. Others, well, just did not produce like we (or anyone else) had projected.
Sometimes you get the girl….sometimes her boyfriend shoots you.
Who were some of the QB successes, and failures, of the 2008 season so far?:
SUCCESS STORIES:
DAVID JOHNSON - Tulsa: I had him in the top 15 before the season, and everyone thought I was nuts. I still may be nuts…but right on Johnson. He has taken over where Paul Smith left off, and is the leading fantasy producer, nationally, topping the nation with 23 TD passes.
CHASE CLEMENT - Rice: Flanked with the great Jarett Dillard at WR, Clement and his fave target have set the NCAA career record for TD hookups…and still have a number of games left to blow up the stat books. Clement also has rushed for 323 yards and 5 TDs to compliment his 1748 passing yards and 16 pass TDs.
COLT McCOY - Texas: People forgot about his frosh season and focused on his weaker sophomore season. I did not, and McCoy has proved me right so far, throwing 16 TD passes and adding 317 yards and 4 TDs rushing, in a great start to his junior season.
FAILURES (THE HENRY PAULSON-BEN BERNANKE TROPHY):
GIOVANNI VIZZA - North Texas: Granted, he was going to have it rough during the non-conference sked, but should have produced more against Tulsa’s and Rice’s defenses. After a weak performance vs Florida International…Vizza has been a real Dolly Parton….big bust.
TIM TEBOW - Florida: Many thought he would suffer a drop in production…but few thought it would be so drastic. The Heisman Winner has only rushed for 157 yards and 2 TDs so far…and thrown for 1025 yards and 8 TDs. “No Heisman for you”, says the Heisman Fascist.
DAN LeFEVOUR - Central Michigan: Some think of him as “Tim Tebow Lite”…and seems to have cloned him in 2008 production. The Chips QB has only 318 yards and 3 TD rushing, and has thrown for only 7 TDs. Granted, CMU did not match up well against Georgia, but the rest of the schedule should have been favorable for LeFevour

Of course, we did not forget the Prime-Time/Pine-Time lists for Week Seven. Hey, how could we!
One thing to notice, as conference games begin, that our lists may be slightly shorter. This is due to fewer overall games being played (fewer FBS-FCS games) and many schools finally having off weeks…note that most schools this season have two off-weeks, and some even have three off-weeks.
PRIME-TIME THIS WEEK:
ZAC ROBINSON (Oklahoma State) and CHASE DANIEL (Missouri): Robinson is starting to pick up his game, while Daniel is getting fitted for the Heisman right as we speak. This is a real land-mine game for Mizzou, as the Cowboys seem to find a way to eek out one stunner or two during the season. Look for a lot of offense this week from both QBs
COLIN KAEPERNICK (Nevada) and CHASE HOLBROOK (New Mexico State): Smells like a shootout, and Kaepernick can run if his arm fails him. Holbrook is finally getting into his groove after NMSUs late start to the 2008 season (remember they did not play first two weeks). Also, Holbrook would love to wail on Nevada, because they seem to physically wail on him in past meetings.
TIM HILLER (Western Michigan) and DREW WILLY (Buffalo): Interesting MAC matchup with two QBs who should get more love. Hiller seems always ripe to throw 2-4 TDs per game, while Willy has led an improving Bulls offense. Anything to make the UatB “Smoking Bull Scoreboard” start “smokin’” is cool with me.
DAVID JOHNSON (Tulsa) and BO LEVI MITCHELL (SMU): Johnson is definitely a no-brainer vs the Ponies defense, however, the true frosh Mitchell is showing signs of improvement each week. Tulsa will win big, but do not be surprised SMU scores their share.
ROBERT GRIFFIN (Baylor) vs Iowa State: Another true-frosh who should have a big game this week against one of the weaker Big XII foes.
OTHER PRIME-TIME QBs: GRAHAM HARRELL, Texas Tech; MAX HALL, BYU; BRIAN JOHNSON, Utah; CASE KEENUM, Houston, JUICE WILLIAMS, Illinois; MARK SANCHEZ, USC;
ON THE FENCE THIS WEEK:
SAM BRADFORD (Oklahoma) and COLT McCOY (Texas): You will not see these two QBs on this part of the list too much, but the Red River Shootout will be a doozy this year, as both are Top 5 teams. Look for the defenses to step up in this game.
KELLEN MOORE (Boise State) at Southern Miss: Boise will win this game, but this is a tough trip for the Broncos to travel all the way to Hattiesburg. Even with USMs struggles on defense, I see BSU winning this one with their ground game…not having to rely so much on Moore.
ADAM WEBER (Minnesota) at Illinois: Minny will go to a bowl game in 2008, but they still do not have the horses to play with the Big Ten Elite. I just do not see Weber doing a lot in this game…and did I refer to the Illini as “Big Ten Elite”?
THE PINE-TIME PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
RUDY CARPENTER (Arizona State) vs USC: The Trojans already suffered their Pac-10 upset to Oregon State, and now will probably devour the rest of the Pac-ers. Sit Carpenter this week.
CURTIS PAINTER (Purdue) vs Ohio State: Not only Painter usually struggles against the Big Ten elite, he has been struggling against the not-so-elite. This will be a long game for Painter at the Horseshoe.
NOTABLES OFF THIS WEEK:
JOHN PARKER WILSON, Alalbama; JEVAN SNEAD, Ole Miss; MATT GROTHE, South Florida; CHASE CLEMENT, Rice; RUSTY SMITH, Fla Atlantic.
