FROM THE SHOTGUN…Week Two QB Prime Time/Pine Time
September 1st, 2008 by Daniel Freer
Is everybody happy? College Football 2008 is now in full swing.
Of course, some of your fantasy teams did quite well…others are wondering “what happened to Tim Tebow?” (warned ya about those early non-conference cream-puff games).
Be on the lookout again this week with star QBs playing vanilla opponents, although there will be fewer of those type of games this week.
In fact, you should see some competitive QB matchups, including BYUs Max Hall (pictured, thanks IconSMI ) facing Washington and Husky QB Jake Locker (both you should play this week).
And, more QB PRIME TIME PLAYERS to note…
C.J. BACHER (Northwestern) vs THADDEUS LEWIS (Duke): This game should see a lot of offense, no doubt. We all know Bacher will put up numbers, but watch Lewis, too. He did not go wild on James Madison, but did hit WR Eron Riley for a couple of TDs. Expect more from that combo.
ADAM WEBER (Minnesota) vs TYLER SHEEHAN (Bowling Green): They both run, throw, sell concessions at halftime (OK not the latter)…but these two QBs are multi-threats who both ran for game-winning TDs late in their openers. BGSU won last year at Minnesota, and the Gophers would like to exact some revenge at BGs Doyt Perry Stadium.
COLIN KAEPERNICK (Nevada) vs GRAHAM HARRELL (Texas Tech): The “I don’t wanna go pee because I might miss something” game of the week. Mr. Harrell, who threw for over 500 yards last week in a win vs Eastern Washington, probably will match that vs the Wolf Pack. Kaepernick is a year older, throws like a cannon, and runs like a gazelle. Should be an offensive buffet.
RUSTY SMITH (Florida Atlantic) vs JOSEPH WEBB (UAB): Both QBs struggled a little last week (though Webb had over 100 yards rushing vs Tulsa), but should put up some numbers this week. Smith will have many good games this season, while Webb is a nice #2 or #3 QB whose running ability will want you to play him at times during the season.
ZAC ROBINSON (Oklahoma State) vs CASE KEENUM (Houston): Although Robinson had somewhat an off week, he should be all-guns (and all-runs) this week as the Pokes matchup vs Houston should be a shoot-out. Keenum put up big numbers against Southern U. last week, but is capable of putting up numbers on OSU.
DAVID JOHNSON (Tulsa) vs GIOVANNI VIZZA (North Texas): Johnson had a nice game at UAB last week, and should go wild on the Mean Green, while Vizza gets a chance to pad up the stats page on the Tulsa defense. Should be an entertaining game.
OTHERS TO PLAY THIS WEEK: CURTIS PAINTER, Purdue; WILLIE TUITAMA, Arizona; PAT WHITE, West Virginia; RYAN CARPENTER, Arizona State; TIM TEBOW, Florida; CHASE DANIEL, Missouri; NATE DAVIS, Ball State; CHASE CLEMENT, Rice;
ON THE FENCE:
DAN LeFEVOUR (Central Michigan) at Georgia: The only time this QB will go in this column in 2008…it will be hard for LeFevour to put up the numbers on the Dawgs like he does on other opponents. Fortunately no other CMU opponent will have the defense UGA does.
CHRIS NICKSON (Vanderbilt) vs South Carolina: Nickson had an excellent game at Miami(Ohio), but South Carolina has a pretty good defense, and needs that D to win games as their offense is struggling. Best to save Nickson for another week.
JUICE WILLIAMS (Illinois) vs Eastern Illinois: Juice had his best passing game ever last weekend in the loss vs Missouri, but he will not be needed to rally the Illini from a big deficit this week. I think Illini coach Ron Zook will rest Juice once a comfortable lead is achieved.
PINE TIME THIS WEEK:
MATT GROTHE (South Florida) at UCF: I know I am going to hear “UCF Homer” this week for telling people to sit Grothe, but this game will be a defensive one. It has to be, because UCFs best chance to score is from their defense and special teams. Also, this game could be affected by Tropical Storm/Hurricane Hanna, making UCFs Bright House Networks Stadium a pig-pen. No, being a “UCF Homer” is telling you to start Knights QB Mike Greco…
JAMIE HAMPTON (Troy) at LSU: He was serviceable at Middle Tennessee last week, but if Appalachian State QB Armanti Edwards struggled vs the Tiger defense, Hampton will suffer the same fate.
NOTABLES OFF THIS WEEK:
MARK SANCHEZ, USC; KELLEN MOORE, Boise State; MIKE TEEL, Rutgers; JONATHAN CROMPTON, Tennessee; CHASE HOLBROOK, New Mexico State (Game with Nicholls State postponed)
