Going Deep: Dance with the WR who brung ya

By Vince Mullins | November 19, 2008

Sherman's Scorched EarthFirst off, best wishes to all of you as you progress through the playoffs in your leagues. I would like to think that Fantasy College Blitz is your General Sherman of college football knowledge leading many in a scorched earth policy through the southern portion of the fantasy college football landscape.

Speaking of Southern references, I am a big proponent of the concept that this time of year is like the annual cotillion after the harvest. Or your own personal homecoming dance. Just don’t overthink your selection of mates, you dance with the girl that has always been by your side. Hence, start your best players regardless of matchup since they got you to this point..

So you know your permastarters (minus the “three strikes and you are out” SMU duo) so our focus this week will be some WR3 type players. TO THE MATCHUPS!

Lots of idle weeks on the schedule for some of the finer wide receivers this week, but not as bad as last week - I had a friend in my favorite league have to sit Crabtree and Dillard in the semis. Ouch babe.

All eyes form both the fantasy and reality worlds will be on Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium in Norman OK as the undefeated Red Raiders of Texas Tech stand up to their new biggest rival Oklahoma Sooners Safe to say that given the top two scoring teams in the nation and 40th ranked defenses that it is safe to play Crabtree, Lewis, “Elf” Morris, Iglesias, Johnson and Gresham. Hell, ya might even pick up Craig James kid…

Players that are definitely off the roll - Dez Bryant, Julio Jones, Mike Jones, AJ Green, Dezmon Briscoe, Jeremy Maclin and Chase Coffman, Kenny McKinley, DeAndre Brown, Jordan Shipley, and Jamarko Simmons are all kicking back with an extra sweater on this weekend as they recuperate during their bye week.

(PS - imagine how refreshed Michigan State RB Javon Ringer must feel after a week off! Sorry to step on your RB toes, Drew…)

INJURY ALERT

Eric Decker, Minnesota hosts Iowa - probable after spraining an ankle in the Northwestern game three weeks ago. Iowa is an elite defense that is 11th nationally in road yards allowed per game (288). Will Carroll and the Cowgirls will likely have an update in video form later - may I suggest

PRIME TIME

Did you know TY Hilton of Florida International leads the nation’s WR in yards from scrimmage in November?  He faces the always acquiescent Louisiana-Monroe defense ranked 93rd on our system.

Austin Collie of BYU ranks second in YFS in November for wideouts - DO NOT SIT HIM against #11 defense Utah unless there are squall conditions.

Temple was one of my preseason surprise teams and has been OK, mostly on the strength of their defense in their inaugural MAC season - they host Eastern Michigan and have a breakout performer in Jason Harper last week (209 yards rec and 2TD). He might help.

One of my favorite TEs in the country is Arizona’s Rob Gronkowski and after missing the first month with mono - he has emerged as the main target of QB Tuitama much more so then Michael Thomas and could be a valuable WR3 if still free.

Hawaii is a much better team at home (if you have ever done the flight you would understand). In fact the Warriors avg 2 TD rec per game at home versus one on the road. They host the Vandals of Idaho and their 118th ranked defense that gives up six TDs a game - I suggest that if you are really in need of help you reacquaint yourself with Greg Salas and Malcolm Lane.

PINE TIME

Seyi Ajirotutu, Fresno - he has been hotter than the desert this month with all the injuries to the RBs, but Lonyae Miller is now probable and San Jose defense ranks in the top third on the BlitzIndex. Beware the Spartans.

Arrelious Benn, Illinois at Northwestern - I have sat him before and have yet to carry his torch this season - with QB Juice Williams being more inconsistent than Liz Phair’s music career you should sit Benn against one of the better defenses in the Big Ten.

All Louisville WR at West Virginia - the only thing more surprising than the Mountaineers being in the Big East title race after that horrific start is that Cardinal QB Hunter Cantwell has completed TD passes to nine receivers. Scott Long is the team leader but is out for the year and Bill Stewart stewards one of our Top Ten defenses that is particularly apt at not allowing the big play (9th nationally with 4.37 yards per play allowed). Pick one of the guys above the line instead of solving this roulette wheel of offense.

The Forum is hotter than McDonald’s coffee right now, whether your colleagues are prepping for their playoff games or it is just Neil Young trash talking his matchup with yours truly. Be a part of it!

Also, stay tuned as we are working out our off-season coverage - we have a very unique coverage planned for the bowl games for your entertainment purposes only. Then of course a road trip to the Senior Bowl and NFL Draft coverage is on tap after the holidays. Mazeltov!
