Going Deep in Week 2: New permastarter WRs
September 11th, 2009 by Vince Mullins
Last week I lamented the dearth of college football wide receivers that you can count on each week for stats.
I had some names on my radar that broke out, some highly rated preseason picks spoil the bed and some new names that everyone in college fantasy football needs to know about immediately.
Some new guys graduate to permastarter status (better late than never), and some free agent hot/cold discussion to follow.
TOP TIER PERMASTARTERS
Dez Bryant, OSU hosts Houston – Cougars are not a strong defense, and Dez Bryant may be the most unstoppable receiver of the decade after Mike Crabtree. Plau him without a second thought – kinda like don’t bet against Tim Tebow.
Dezmon Briscoe, Kansas at UTEP – last minute scratch in the opener, no suggestion of such early Saturday, dammit. Covers.com lists him as probable for Week 2 and Phil Steele calls for a UTEP upset in a high scoring special. Implicitly Permastarter means “start permanently”, but threat of suspension and weak road record urge caution. Stay tuned for Briscoe guidance.
Eric Decker, Minn vs. Air Force – I know it isn’t like the servicemen to get cocky, but a 72-o blitzing of Nicholls St., this will be a much different game for the Falcons. Defense cannot match up with Gopher talent (even 2 deep at QB with Weber and Grey).
Stephen Williams, Toledo hosts Colorado (Friday night) – no joke here, 67 pass attempts are rarely an isolated event (early games by Drew Brees and Tim Couch come to mind from fantasy college seasons past). Rocket QB Aaron Opelt is no Brees or Couch, but the Buffs defense is not buff and Williams has another young receiver in freshman Eric Page to divert coverage attention. Hell, if the Navy game taught us anything it is that you can throw on Ohio State. Welcome back to permastarter spot Mr. Williams.
Michael Floyd, Notre Dame at Michigan – Again I apologize for being late to his party – Wolverine defense is better then the Wolfpack, but it looks like the Golden Domed ones are committed to the pass. Pretty average schedule for ND as well so start him every week.
Marty Gilyard, Cincy hosts SEMO – Cincinnati was the bomb on Labor Day. Gilyard was a pereseason Top 15 and class of the squad. Permastart him now even though SEMO is pretty good.
Mackay Jacobsen, BYU at Tulane – nice game in the upset over Oklahoma, interesting to see how the long road trip two weeks in a row as they head to the Big Easy. Tulane couldn’t handle Tulsa multiple looks, and if Unga is back healthy as reported this could be a big game for Big Mack.
TIER TWO
Jordan Shipley, Texas at Wyoming - Colt McCoy’s roommate continues to get it done, and should do so even at the nation’s highest elevated field of play in Laramie.
DeAndre Brown, Smiss hosts UCF – talent is deserving of lofty status, but leg isn’t. He says he is 100%, Coach Fedora thinks they can win without him I suppose as he is non-comital. I am not, sit him again even for the C-USA opener until you hear differently.
Detron Lewis, Texas Tech hosts Rice - even against inferior comps it is clear he is the #1 Red Raider. Alex Torres is manning the hallowed flanker spot but Lewis stands right next to him.
TIGHT ENDS -
The only guys I trust are Aaron Hernandez of Florida and Dennis Pitta of BYU. And neither suffers from a debilitating injury which is a unique thing this season (see Gresham, Gronkowski). Cody Slate of Marshall is a wonder to behold, and the reemergence of Tony Moeaki at iowa is nice to see. If you do not have a healthy TE of these four, you must prepare yourself for a season of picking up free agent matchups. Arkansas DJ Williams was quiet in Week One as Ron Jumper of Little Rocks ESPN Radio mentioned a couple nights ago.
I commit to you to make TE analysis a Sunday post on the Forum so you can get an early jump on your competition – your input will be greatly appreciated in this endeavour as I fear it will not be easy.
Downside surprises of Week One
SMU receivers - I knew RB Shawnbrey McNeal was supposed to be good, but 158 yards rushing? i know they squeaked by Stephen F Austin, butless than 5 yds/ pass attempt by Bo Levi Mitchell is big cause for concern. I think the Mustangs will get up for a CUSA battle against the new mini-Tebow Joe Webb of UAB – keep playing Aldrick and Emmanuel.
Rejus Benn, Illinois hosts Illinois State – Injury alert, sprained ankle but back at practice. All Illini soiled the bed against Missouri. My feeling is that Zook will let his guys feast on the smaller school to get their confidence up, but we and especially Will Carroll will stay on top of the injury.
Breakout players to believe in
Derek Moye, Penn State – I have liked Daryl Clark as a QB, now we can be certain of his primary target. Schedule is friendly too.
Eric Page, Toledo - true freshman who is a local Toledo product, city player of the year who ran at numerous formations. Little fella started his career with 12 catches against Purdue, next is weak Colorado at home and soon to get to the MAC schedule. Believe, and thanks to superfan Neil Young for the tip.
Blair White, Michigan State - whichever soph QB gets the most reps, Blair White is a good mix of possessionand athleticism. I have Mark dell as the most athletic of the group, but he has never put up consistent numbers
Travis Benjamin, Miami – the schedule will be Murder but showed me a lot as a WR on the Monday Night battle of Florida. Also an electric returner, should be a good WR3
Breakout players to question
Marquis Hamilton, Iowa State – spread is on, but the return of WR Darius Darks will take most opportunities once healthy.
Gerald Baptiste, Southern Miss – unlikely to matter much once DeAndre Brown gets healthy. Now that I type that now I realize that leg was shattered just six months ago – good pickup for insurance.
