GOING DEEP: More stars out, but let’s focus on who is in
October 30th, 2009 by Vince Mullins
If you haven’t heard, here are the stud pre-season-top-ten WRs watching from the sidelines this week. Paging Dr. Kevorkian (but I will choose Dr. Carroll any day)! How many more of our speedy warriors on the flank will miss significant time?
Eric Decker, Minnesota - sprained arch, opting for surgery. CUT HIM
Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State - being made an example by the NCAA for lying about his non-violation. Reggie Bush should be feeling lucky this week. C’mon Son, CUT HIM
Vincent Brown, SDSU – not pre-season, but an in-season Top 10 who hurt sprained a thumb ligament early in the Colorado State game. Surgery this week put him out until almost Thanksgiving.
Michael Floyd, Notre Dame – still out with the fractured collarbone, but word is out that he may return next week for Nov. 7 Navy battle. PICK HIM UP!
McKay Jacobson, BYU - missed a few weeks with a hammy, pulled from lineup right before kickoff of TCU. Bye week this week, expect a healthy return – if his absence didn’t destroy your playoff chances (just sayin’…)
and maybe Mike Williams of Syracuse. My boy Matt McCluskey still thinks the plug could be pulled at any moment on Mr. Williams but all public signs are a go for “1″ this weekend hosting Cincinnati. START FOR NOW
If I could be the Wide Receiver Analyst who Stares at Goats and make these guys all healthy for you, I would.
But enough problems, let us discuss solutions – including a big sit reco. If you need to fill in some WR3 or so, I will begin the journey around the nation seeking the constant variety of free agents and sleepers.
Jacoby Ford, Clemson - VERY likely on a roster, but a reminder to start him given that the Tigers are facing the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina, the only FCS opponent. Not that his game winner over Miami (FL) game-winner in OT out him on the back burner or anything.
Demarco Sampson, San Diego State – I will admit to a 18th round draft pick of him in one of my leagues, and I cut him after doing nothing in the first two weeks. Here are his last two weeks for the big boy after Brown injury:
vs. Brigham Young 5-77-T2 24.20
at Colorado State 15-257-T3 57.20
That almost equals the entire season production of Southern Miss DeAndre Brown. Wow. I see a couple of my leagues that still have QB Ryan Lindley available for the New Mexico game this weekend, that may be the only way to get exposure to the Aztec rebirth under Coach Brady Hoke.
Marcus Easley, Connecticut – while the stabbing murder of Jasper Howard rightly took center stage in Storrs and throughout the nation, it has kept the light off the spring game stud Easley finally breaking out. He is 14th in the nation over the last three with a TD in each. While you likely know that I respect the Rutgers defense, UConn offense has statted well on Pitt (27) and West Virginia (42).
Greg Childs, Arkansas - still available in the Charity Pro-Am league and maybe yours, Hogs host the Eagles of Eastern Michigan and their 117th ranked defense. With the absence of Joe Adams (stroke) and the shrinking TE DJ Williams, Childs may put up WR2 like numbers.
DeVier Posey, Ohio State – yes, you have to deal with ballhog QB Terrelle Pryor, but Pryor is much better than that Purdue game showed and Posey is his favorite target. Posey is top ten WR in last three weeks and faces #94D New Mexico State.
And I still like North Texas WR if you are struggling to find a WR3 – Jamaal Jackson has been a PPR stud for a month, but Michael Outlaw and the ultra-gazelle Sam Roberson is back healthy as #119 D Western Kentucky is in the house. I would rank them in the same order you see here.
And if you really want to impress your leaguemates, take a shot with a Hilltopper – WR Jake Gaebler had a huge game in the MT shootout, but has hit paydirt in the last two and faces the 11thD Mean Green.
SIT
DeMaryius Thomas, Georgia Tech – at first blush, the visit to Vandy seems like it should be easy for the Yellow jackets, but the ‘Dores sport the nation’s 18th ranked defense. Vandy has only allowed 15 TDs but have allowed 13 FGs. This game feels like it will be a tighter affair with few big plays, so sitting one of the most efficient WRs in the nation makes sense.
