GOING DEEP: Week 7 WR Start-sit with DEEP THOUGHTS on DEEP ROSTERS

October 15th, 2009 by Vince Mullins

Tulsa, Texas Tech, Hawaii and Houston have given me fits for years trying to figure out who will stat the best week-to-week. So why not try it in front of a nation of college football zealots?

Former Iowa WR James Cleveland gets it done in Houston (Icon SMI).

Cougars James Cleveland leads the nation with 5 rec TDs in the last three weeks, Tyron Carrier is in top ten Fantasy Points also. This week Houston hosts #113 D Tulane so those guys will both go nuts, and maybe even Charles Sims and Patrick Edwards who seems to have taken the possession receiver role well.

Texas Tech faces an excellent Nebraska defense led by everyone’s favorite DT Ndamukong Suh – please do remember that the Husker Blackshirts beat up on a lot of Sun Belt teams, but you cannot argue with the nation’s stingiest D as they make offenses go 34 yards for every point (median is 14.7). And also know that Coach Leach could care less who the QB is…Two guys that should be on milk cartons are Ed Britton and Lyle Leong, both struggled out of the gate, teased us with a a couple big games and are afterthoughts since the autumnal equinox. That leaves serious fantasy consideration only for Detron Lewis, Tramain Swindall and Alex Torres. If you drafted Leong since he is Potts HS teammate, the absence of Taylor Potts may be enough to cut him. Jacoby Franks caught his first TD last week, but then again there were 7 TDs thrown…

I was at the Tulsa game Wednesday night – same issue but most disturbing is that now three times this season the GH have only had one TD to wide receivers. They had two last night but one was Flex Damaris Johnson on a trick play. Personally, ignore the siren song of Tulsa wideouts unless you can stomach a 2 point night smattered in with some 15′s (or vice versa).

And poor Hawaii, how we miss thee, let me count the ways (I particularly miss the late night local broadcasts on ESPN Gamplan – those guys pronounced the Pacific Islander names COOL). Greg Salas is by far the best option and even he is slowing down after the QB Alexander injury. Rodney Bradley is still available in a few leagues of mine and might make a good WR4. With Royce Pollard out this week at Idaho (winning record in Moscow!) you may reintroduce yourself to Kealoha Pilares.

and now I will scour the country for a constant variety of sleepers and free agents…

RETURNING FROM SUSPENSION

Cortez Gent, FAU at North Texas - good news he was reinstated last week and is still a free agent in a few of my leagues. Bad news is flu is sweeping the Owls team early in the week, light on updates…Definitely worth a pickup, maybe even a play against a Bottom 20 defense.

RETURNING TO GLORY

Dion Morton of Colorado State scores against rival Colorado in the season opener - and hasn't stopped since (Icon SMI)

Dion Morton, CSU at TCU - TD in four straight will be a struggle to extend against the #19 ranked D.

Do remember that he was a permastarter last season with some excellent consistency. Rest of the way schedule is very doable.

EMERGING STARTERS

Vic Hall, Virginia – now a starting wideout and the definition of a SLASH, he is listed as the starting WR. Hall is one of the best athletes (and it appears one of the best teammates ever) in the ACC coming back from a hip injury who got his first receiving TD and now faces the horrible Maryland defense.

LaVon Brazill, Ohio - yes he crapped out last week, but no news of an injury so I stick with him. the next three on the schedule are very porous defenses and could fix up a hurt WR corps (you know, if you have Dez Bryant, Mckay Jacobson and Joe Adams on a roster or something…)

Jamaal Jackson, North Texas hosts FAU – little fella grabbed ten and eleven catches in each of the last two, but no TD celebrations. As I mentioned above, Owls dealing with flu and own my #116 ranked defense

Brandon Stewart, Wyoming at USAFA – check out the statlines (run, rec) for the last three as he ranks 25th among WR during this time:

9/26 vs. UNLV 6-31-0, 1-19-1

10/3 at FAU 9-79-1, 2-13-0

10/10 vs.NM 13-62-1, 2-67-1

I have been looking for a breakout from a Wyoming player and this soph is it.

DEEP APNEA-LIKE SLEEPERS

first off, hat tip to Phil Steele for a couple names off my radar that make sense. Stanley Morrison of Utah State and Chris McClover of Middle Tennessee are big ypc guys with good matchups. But I got someone next who is WAY off the radar.

Greg Ellingson, FIU hosts Troy – I was digging the story last season on this behemoth speedster since OC Bill Legg brought in the Purdue spread. The 6-4 Ellingson has at least four inches on every Trojan DB, and he has a TD in two straight plus had a nice game against Alabama in the opener. Besides the pre-Thanksgiving matchup against the Gators where I expect he will have “reptile dysfunction”, the Golden Panthers face a soft Sun Belt Schedule.

Keep an eye out for the “FREE DEZ BRYANT” sign I will be sporting in Stillwater this weekend, esp. at the Missouri-OSU game at 8pm ET on ESPN2. See if I can get some national pub for this blog thing!
