Going Deep: Wide Receiver Preview for Week 3 (Bonus coverage)

By Vince Mullins | September 12, 2008

I hope all our readers are having a better time than Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano…is he sure he doesn’t want the Penn State job?

I just finished clearing out the DVR last night, so before Going Deep to the wideouts (after the jump) I thought I would share some “Quick Slants” if you will…

ECU 24, WVU 3 - better team won. ECU more physical. Best story of the early season and deserving or Top 15.

Rice 42, Memphis 35 - seriously, I would burn this one to a DVD if I could figure that technological feat out. Life lesson - things don’t always work well right at the start, but if you believe in the soundness of your plan and the commitment of your teammates than it will all work out. Owls dropped ten passes including a gimme flea-flicker TD by Jarret Dillard in the first quarter,  but Coach David Bailiff got that offense rolling in the second half then got the amazing INT return for the win. Highlights here and prepare to shed a tear.  Seriously, the only team that can stop Rice is Rice. Oh yeah, and maybe Texas. Also, Memphis is SO LOADED at skill positions and QB Arkelon Hall reminds me of Byron Leftwich but with athleticism, but in the end they lost on big plays.

GT 19, BC 16 - I said it last week, I will say it again - DROP ALL BC WRs. Chris Crane “looks the part” of a QB but he is horrible. Chris Rix says, “Darn, that Crane struggles”. GT throws the ball around more than you think and you should keep an eye out for WR DeMaryius Thomas this season if you need a WR4. RB Jonathan Dwyer is as good as they come, and QB Josh Nesbitt looks like a very good dual-threat QB.

Air Force 23, Wyoming 3 - One of the most boring games I have ever seen, neither offense was sharp - maybe the defenses are better than I think? Falcon WRZ Kyle Hardeman is supposed to be the new Chad Hall, just shorter and 30 pounds lighter. If you can stomach 4 touches and 80 yards a game he is a great pick. I couldn’t, I cut him this week for Maurice Jones of Memphis.

BYU 28, Washington 27 - Huskies might lose to Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo if not for Jake Locker, he is the entire team, not just the offense. Cougar TE and new permastarter Dennis Pitta might lead the nation in receiving, Harvey Unga is an NFL talent and Max Hall just drives this Cadillac. FSN team of vets Barry Tompkins and Petros Papadakis mixed themselves into the action just enough. Oh, and the celebration call was a travesty against the human struggle - the rule needs to be changed because if we cannot exalt in moments of splendor we are nothing more than dirty animals.

OK, time to put down the Bombay Sapphire and get to work. Cue the Permastarters…

PERMA STARTERS

Jarett Dillard of Rice Owls1. Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech hosts SMU (Get it in Gear, you BAMF - #3 start of the week)
2. Chris Williams, New Mexico State at Nebraska (only 74% of CW owners are starting him on U-Sports? The other 26% must be unemployable.)
3. Jarett Dillard, (right Icon MSI) Rice at Vandy (In this Brain Bowl, the Commodores face an offense like few others. And when do the Owls get a home game? )
4. Dante Love, Ball State at Akron (This is Dante Love’s world, we are just living in it. Thanks to Chris for that.)
5. Emmanuel Sanders, SMU at Texas Tech (leads nation in TD)
6. Michael Thomas, Arizona at New Mexico (woe be the Lobos)
7. Jeremy Maclin, Missouri vs. Nevada (Wolfpack slowed TTU at home, not on road)
8. Casey Fitzgerald, North Texas at LSU (OK, maybe not as no one Green avg more than 11 ypc, which of course means he will go 3-205T2 or something.)
9. Bryan Anderson, Central Michigan at Ohio (are Bobcats for real? Not likely, remember Akron lost 20-2 to Buckeyes last year)
10. Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State hosts Missouri State (this one sounds like a trap to me after 4 TD against Houston, but seriously, no one in America can matchup with him physically. No one. As long as he doesn’t have Adarius Bowman as a mentor, sky is the limit. Watch for biblical rain from Ike as they moved the kick up to 1pm.)
11. Dennis Pitta, BYU hosts UCLA (First TE ever on the list, I am all in on the Pitta bandwagon. Garret Mills is jealous of all the passes thrown his way.)

Just off the radar? Percy Harvin - UF, Aldrick Robinson - SMU, Detron Lewis - TTU, Michael Jones - ASU, Brennan Marion - Tulsa, Dezmon Briscoe - KU,

Sleepers? Taylor Price - Ohio, DeAndre Brown - USM, Brandon Tate - UNC (who is leaving Scarlet Knights in his wake as I type)

Year of the TE?

Pitta leads the nation in receptions and 7th in nation with 361 yards from scrimmage. Rice’s James Casey plays multiple positions and is 15th in YFS. Houston Mark Hafner has three TD from the “Big Slot”. And in the state of OK, OSU Brandon Pettigrew looks like a top ten NFL draft pick and Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma is just getting warmed up. Travis Beckum and Rob Gronkowski aren’t even healthy yet. Do not sleep on Darius Hill, Shawn Nelson, Jared Cook and DJ Williams.

For instance, in my 32-team all-FBS league called NCAA Project I screwed up badly in my WR selection in late July - so I went to TE available and I will roll with Hafner and Gresham over any other wideout right now on the free agent wire. 2008 will be the year of the Tight End.

PINE TIME

USC WR vs Ohio State - the college skill position equivalent of the House of Representatives versus the best defense in the land over the last three years. Your guess on the breakout performer is as good as mine.

Kenny McKinley USC hosts Georgia - bad hammy + 2QB platoon + Bulldog D equals vicious pine. Plus 11 of 13 games in this series have gone UNDER THE TOTAL since 1992 and that number suggests a 27-20 Bulldog win. You should turn in your fantasy man card if you try to fight this many trends.

Hawaii at Oregon State - a bit of a nasty rivalry full of filthy mouths and bad attitudes. Tyler Graunke has emerged from Manoa area milk cartons TO GET THE START at QB, and Beavers can be run upon. Then add in that no one has separated himself in the WR battle. Again, I don’t like the odds when there are so many options availablel to you in FCF.

PRIME TIME

Mark Dell Michigan State hosts FAU - FAU CB tavious Polo is only 5-10, despite skills cannot match up vertically

Erron Riley Duke hosts Navy - Thank goodness our nation’s defense is tighter than the Navy football defense. I hope you took some quiet time today to thank our troops on this 9/11 anniversary.

David Gettis hosts Washington State (FRIDAY due to Ike) - if this is a just world, Gettis will have one huge game for the record books this year and the Cougars could be it. With Wazzou traveling and not having planned for the short week they could have a hell of a time with the Bear Spread.

Jordan Norwood Penn State at Syracuse - Daryl Clark looks like the real deal, and Norwood is his top target. Syracuse is Syracuse. Gab him for WR3 in “BCS-Only” leagues.

Your favorite Boise WR hosts Bowling Green - Jeremy Childs is back from suspension, Titus Young is #4 in yds/gm, Austin Pettis has skills and freshman Tyler Shoemaker had 2 TD in the opener. I fear that the BGSU we saw lay down at Minnesota is more the norm than the shocker at Pitt. Boise has lost one game at home THIS DECADE. Broncos may score 55 themselves.

SLEEPERS

Andre Jones, Akron hosts Ball State - remember that Akron last-second kick return that beat WMU last year? and the screaming banshee TV guys who covered it? That was Jones and he has successfully transplanted to WR. Check him out, and if you know nothing of Akron you gotta read Nick’s stuff about the MAC.

ECU WRs at Tulane - Ike might screw with this one, but you need to be aware of Jamar Bryant and soph Dwayne Harris. Harris gets touches like Love/Maclin/Rodgers and he is so quick it would be hard to tackle him in a phone booth. Bryant was #52 WR according to Phil Steele but only 1 % of U-sports teams start him - come on people!!!

Maurice Jones, Memphis at Marshall - looked like a poor man’s Terrel Owens against Rice, but that will happen when you blitz 50% of the time. Duke Calhoun sttod out two years ago, I have waited for 6-9 Carlos Singleton for too long, it is now time to see Jones get some love with Arkelon Hall the best QB in Memphis since Danny Wimprine and a weak schedule.
