Insight Bowl – Minnesota (6-6) vs Iowa State (6-6)
What can you say about two 6-6 football teams meeting in the Insight Bowl? Well before you go writing this one off as a game you don’t have to see let me borrow a phrase from Lee Corso, “not so fast my friend.” For the past few years the Insight Bowl has been a Wild West shoot out. The winning team has scored more than 40 points in 5 of the last 6 games. And the Golden Gophers will be playing in their third Insight Bowl in 4 years. So pull up a chair, sit back and get ready for the show. If this game is anything like the last few Insight Bowls you are in for a treat.
Minnesota is led by Junior QB Adam Weber. The aerial assault lost some of its punch though when Eric Decker was lost. The Gophers still averaged 207.7 yards per game in passing offense. The running game does not pose a real threat. Duane Bennett is the leading rusher with just 376 yards on the season. This is a nice match up for the Gopher Air attack. The Cyclones passing defense gave up 251.1 yards per game. Expect Tim Brewster to have his boys ready to take advantage of the Cyclones passing defense.
Iowa State completes an amazing turnaround from last years 2-10 team to finish 6-6 and earn a bowl bid. This team is better than the 6-6 record though (right Nebraska fans?). The Cyclones are a balanced team led by QB Austen Arnaud and RB Alexander Robinson. The rushing offense averaged 176.1 yards per game and the passing game averaged 177. Expect to see a lot of Robinson in this game. And if the Cyclones happen to get in a shoot out, they have the weapons to match Minnesota.
One thing about the Insight Bowl, they do have some high scoring games. I expect this matchup to be another one. Don’t be surprised to see a shoot out in overtime. Iowa State 52 Minnesota 46.
