It is time for the NFL, Coach Urban Meyer.
January 10th, 2009 by Drew Smith
Dear Coach Meyer,
Congratulations on your second National Championship in the past three years as once again you clearly out-coached your opponent to win a game that most would say you were out-matched in. But this has been your trade-mark going back to your days at Utah and Bowling Green hasn’t it been?
This got me thinking and I believe it is time for you to take your game to the next level…the NFL. No doubt you leaving the comforts of Gainesville and going to the NFL will be viewed by the masses as a huge mistake. I have to ask the question – would it really be a mistake?
Why would it be a mistake? Is it because people don’t think you are good enough to coach in the NFL? No one is going to actually admit this but this is exactly the case. They are thinking Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier, Butch Davis, Dennis Erickson, Mike Riley and even the great Lou Holtz all failed in their attempt to make the jump why does Urban Meyer think he is any better?
These are the same people that said your gimmicky offense would never work in the SEC, these are the same people that would have told you to not go to Utah because they haven’t won a conference title outright in 45 years and these are certainly the same people who would of said to stay at Notre Dame and not take over a Bowling Green lacking talent coming off a 2 win season.
If you look at it in a pure analytical sense of risks vs. rewards, what are the risks of jumping to the NFL now? The obvious and perhaps the only risk is that you could fail or simple hate the NFL life and now don’t have the Florida job. It has been proven in almost ever example that the top programs in the nation would welcome you back to the college ranks with open arms. You would have many options to choose from which could get you closer to the north region that you wish to return to. Plus you would now have the added selling point to recruits that you have been to the NFL and you can help them get there. Another risk is tarnishing your name by being another college coach who fails in the NFL…which quite frankly is one of the worse arguments as the day you or anyone for that manner starts making decisions based on being afraid to fail will be laying on their deathbed full of regrets.
The risks are quite small but what are the rewards of throwing your hat in the NFL coaching ranks? First off for the family this will represent a huge increase in money that never hurts and even more importantly a more stable home as you will no longer be require to spend the evenings and weekends in recruit’s houses. Secondly you have an opportunity to showcase your coaching skills at the highest level possible, the NFL. Little kids playing Pop Warner football dream of playing in the NFL, playing for the Super Bowl in front of 130 million viewers and given the opportunity of going down as one the greatest football players ever. This is no different for a coach as ambitious as you Coach Meyer who have proven doubters wrong your entire coaching career.
People will undoubtedly tell you that your offense will never work in the NFL. Are you going to sit back and believe them, the same people that said your offense would never work in the SEC or are you ready to prove them wrong all over again? Whether it can be successful in the NFL remains to be seen but all great innovations in football emerge from a cloud of haters. Now is your time Coach Meyer, your time to take a shot at being the Bill Walsh of our generation who takes the NFL by storm with a new offense and charismatic charm. The worse case scenario is that you return to college and become the next Pete Carroll, Nic Saban or Lou Holtz as a coach better suited for the college ranks.
Almost everyone in the college football world would argue against you going to the NFL which is them telling you that you will fail, that you are not a good enough coach, that you are unable to adjust to the pro game. Are you going to accept the assumption that you are an inferior coach to the NFL guys…that you can not be in the same league as the Bill Belichick and Jeff Fisher? Or are you prepared to continue to prove everyone wrong and join the small club of college coaches who succeed in the NFL like previous college head coaches Jimmy Johnson, Bill Walsh and Tom Coughlin?
The timing is perfect for you to take the next challenge and for this football fan I am dying to see if the ‘Urban Meyer Spread Option Attack’ can revolutionize the NFL.
Sincerely,
A Non-Hater
