NFL DRAFT…SMALL SCHOOL GEMS…A Trio Of Wildcats
April 20th, 2009 by Daniel Freer
Fantasy College Blitz “Minister of the Non-BCS”, Daniel Freer, continues his series profiling the NFL Draft prospects from the Non-Division I-FBS schools.
Every year, there are a number of schools that produce multiple NFL Draft picks.
You probably already are familiar with some of those schools…schools like Florida, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, Abilene Christian…
Wait……What? Abilene Christian?
Uh, well…okay….maybe not on an annual basis, but for the 2009 NFL Draft, you just may hear “Abilene Christian” mentioned a few times while you are watching the draft coverage. And, possibly, after reading this article…you will be a little familiar with Wildcat RB Bernard Scott (photo, thanks ACUSports) before his name is called.Abilene Christian University (Abilene, Texas) is a Division II school in the Lone Star Conference, arguably one of the top conferences in Division II football. The ACU Wildcats are one of the top offensive teams in all of college football…averaging over 50 points per game in 2008.
In a Division II playoff game this past season, ACU put up 93 points on LSC rival West Texas A&M…and this was not an overtime game…all points scored were in regulation.
However, we are not sure if the WTAMU defensive coordinator took a jump into the Palo Duro Canyon after that contest.
The top player from that 2008 ACU squad is RB Bernard Scott, (photo, above) who rushed for over 2100 yards and scored 28 TDs in 2008. Scott, the 2008 Harlon Hill Trophy winner (top Division II player) from Vernon, TX (Vernon HS), played well at some of the post-season All-Star games, and the NFL likes his quickness, strength, and soft hands…somewhat reminiscent of another great ACU RB and former NFL star, Wilbert Montgomery. Look for Scott to go as early as the late-3rd round, or, as late as the late-5th round.
As most great offenses have a great QB, ACU has one in Billy Malone. The 6-3, 230 lb QB from Paris, TX (Paris HS) threw for 3213 yards and 36 TDs in 2008…on only 293 pass attempts. Malone (photo, right, thanks Lone Star Conference) ranks second all-time in career passing yards among all QBs who played at Texas colleges (Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell is #1 all-time). Malone has drawn NFL interest with his strong arm, and accuracy on his long passes. Look for Malone to go sometime during the late-5th round…or as late as the 7th round.
Although not the biggest stat-producer from the record-setting 2008 Wildcat squad, WR Johnny Knox may be the first ACU player taken in the 2008 draft. The Channelview, TX (Channelview HS) native caught 56 passes for 1069 yards and 13 TDs in 2008. The NFL loves Knox’s speed (4.41 in the 40…one of the fastest of anyone in the draft) and his good hands. Knox could be the first non-Division I FBS player taken in this draft…and look for him to go as early as the 2d round, but, no later than late-4th/early-5th round.
