NFL DRAFT…SMALL SCHOOL GEMS…Rashad Jennings, Liberty

April 24th, 2009 by Daniel Freer

rashad-jenningsDaniel Freer, Fantasy College Blitz “Minister of the Non-BCS”, continues profiling some of the top NFL picks that come from schools Divison I-FCS and lower.

One thing consistent with most NFL Drafts, there will always be a good RBs available from schools outside the Division I-FCS.

Gosh, arguably the greatest RB in NFL history, the late Walter Payton, played his college football at Jackson State, then a Division II school.

Now, not saying that Liberty University RB Rashad Jennings (photo, thanks The Sports Network) is going to be the next    “Sweetness”…however, do not be surprised he ends up playing quite a bit…maybe even starting…for your favorite team in 2009.

Yes, Jennings is that good.Jennings, a 6-1, 235 lb bruiser from Forest, VA (Liberty Christian Academy), started his college career at Pittsburgh.  After two seasons with the Panthers, and, wanting to be closer to home, he transfered to the Lynchburg, VA-based school.

While with the Flames, Jennings ran all over Big South Conference and non-conference opponents.  In 2008, Jennings rushed for 1507 yards and 17 TDs…on his way to becoming the Big South Conference Player of the Year.

The NFL likes Jennings for his size, his ability to break long runs once in the open field, good receiving skills, and solid blocking ability (notable since he was the featured back for the Flames).

Although there will be a number of top RBs available in the 2009 NFL Draft, Jennings could go as early as the late 2d round…but no later than the early 5th round.
