PAC-10 2008 ALL-FANTASY TEAM

December 26th, 2008 by Daniel Freer

Mix an excellent athlete with an improving program, and good things should happen…especially if that athlete is one of the leading rushers in high-school football history…all-time…nationally (over 9000 yards rushing in HS).

And, later, that athlete becomes the top fantasy performer in his conference..

Stanford RB Toby Gerhart (photo, thanks IconSMI), our Fantasy College Blitz: Pac-10 Fantasy Player of the Year, is that athlete.

The junior from Norco, CA,  ran for over 1100 yards and scored 15 TDs (statistics through November 22nd games), as Stanford almost became bowl-eligible under second-year coach Jim Harbaugh.

When not playing football, Gerhart is an outfielder on Stanford’s perennial nationally-ranked baseball team.

Joining Gerhart on the Pac-10 All-Fantasy Team are

(Note:  Statistics quoted are through November 22nd games)

QUARTERBACK:

MARK SANCHEZ – USC: The top passer in the conference, throwing for nearly 2300 yards and 26 TDs for the Pac-10 champion and Rose Bowl bound Trojans.

RUNNING BACKS:

TOBY GERHART – Stanford: (see above)

JAHVID BEST – California: Led the Golden Bears with nearly 1100 yards rushing and 9 TDs, and added over 200 yards receiving out of the backfield.

JACQUIZZ RODGERS – Oregon State: Rodgers is not a big back, but is so tough to bring down.  Set Pac-10 freshman single-season rushing mark…rushing for 1253 yards and 11 TDs.

RECEIVERS:

SAMMIE STROUGHTER – Oregon State: A big reason why the Beavers were in conference-championship contention until the end of the season…had over 800 yards receiving and 7 TDs.

MIKE THOMAS – Arizona: Led the bowl-bound Wildcats with over 730 yards receiving and 4 TDs,  also rushing for another TD.

PATRICK TURNER – USC: Although he had just over 500 yards receiving in the Trojans balanced and evenly-distributed offense, Turner did catch 8 TD passes.

KICKER:

JASON BONDZIO – Arizona: Led all Pac-10 kickers in scoring with 83 points.

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:

CALIFORNIA: A surprise to many, considering USC’s defense seemed to shut everyone out…but Cal’s defense/special teams scored 6 TDs in 2008…one of the best scoring D/ST in the nation
