Power I: From Beyond the Grave
By Drew Smith | November 6, 2008
I’m home sick for the second day in a row. Maybe I’m not writing this from the grave, but I’m surely living an imitation of it. With Theraflu and Vitamin C as my strength, here is the latest info on the RBs.
We are now entering the part of the season where a lot of teams are facing elimination either because their leagues are starting the playoffs or because they need a win to get into the playoffs. Some RBs that many are counting on this week will face sneaky tough match-ups. I want to point those out plus bring attention to some smart handcuffs for the playoff run.
Charles Scott – LSU: Ok this one is obvious but with Scott banged up a little and facing the #2 rushing defense in the country, this makes Scott a sit in most leagues unless you just have no other options.
C.J. Spiller – Clemson: Spiller had a break out game and I am sure the team will continue to try and feature Spiller in an attempt to prevent him from leaving. However he will have a tough time this week against FSU who comes in with the 18th ranked rush defense. Hold off starting him this week and then take your chances against Duke and Virginia.
Noel Devine – West Virginia: Devine has been a maddening fantasy player this year as there seems to be no rhyme or reason to his fantasy performances. Cincinnati has a very under-rated defense so it would make sense to sit Devine if you have other options.
Shonn Greene – Iowa: Greene has arguable been the most consistent fantasy running back this season as he has eclipsed the 100 yard barrier every game and scored in all but one. However this is the week that it is likely Greene’s run of 100 yards games will end as Iowa heads to Happy Valley and faces a great Penn State defense. A big game this week will make Greene a virtual lock in my opinion for the Fantasy All-American Team, barring a collapse in the final few games.
Jahvid Best – California: Best has battled injuries and has gotten in the dog house a bit with Coach Tedford with his fumbling. He has still been a viable fantasy start most weeks because he gets great production when he touches the ball. However, getting 15 carries against USC is not going to help make him a good fantasy start this week. I recommend benching him if you can.
Michael Smith – Arkansas: Smith has been the lone bright spot for the Razorbacks as the team has really relied on him this season. Unfortunately he gets to face a South Carolina defense this week that just doesn’t give up a ton of yards on the ground. I suspect the game will be closer than a lot of people may think so Smith will get plenty of touches. Just don’t expect him to see a lot of open space.
Stephen Simmons – Northwestern: Simmons is now the starter for Northwestern as Omar Conteh is going to miss this week against Ohio State. I don’t know much about Simmons yet but it is not really that important as the Buckeyes are not the team you want to start an unknown RB against. Conteh is not expected to miss the season so this could be a one-time start. There is no need to go running to pick him up.
LaRod Stephens-Howling – Pittsburgh: If you are an owner of LeSean McCoy, hopefully his slow start didn’t kill your season because he is rolling now. If he was to go down with an injury, the Panthers have a very capable replacement in Stephens-Howling. He could put up enough points to give your team a shot.
Caleb King – Georgia: A lot of teams spent a very high draft pick on Knowshon Moreno and if they were able to overcome a slightly disappointing season, then you need to grab King for the playoff run. If Moreno were to go down, it is quite possible you wouldn’t miss a beat with King.
Stepfon Green – Penn State: Green was a popular free agent pick early in the season but has most likely been dropped over the last 4 weeks as Evan Royster has dominated the carries. If Royster were to go down, then it is safe to assume Green would become the focal point of the offense.
Fui Vakapuna – BYU: Harvey Unga is the man for BYU but the coaching staff has plenty of faith in Vakapuna and would most likely just slide him in the same roll if anything happened to Unga.
