Power I: Quick Hits
September 11th, 2008 by Drew Smith
This week’s edition of the Power-I is going to be quick hitters rather than a general theme, mainly because there is a lot to talk about after two weeks.
Marlon Lucky – Nebraska: I am not saying it is time to waive Lucky, but it is certainly time to start making alternative plans as the new coaching staff is in a pure RBBC, making Lucky someone you can not count on.
Javarris James – Miami: James suffered a high ankle sprain and with the coaching staff’s love affair with Graig Cooper, look for them to not rush James back.
Graig Cooper – Miami: Cooper (left, Icon SMI) becomes a very interesting option in the next couple of weeks now that he is expected to receive the majority of carries. While I love his talent I wonder if defenses will respect the passing game enough for him to see any open space.
Chris Wells – Ohio State: Start Wells if you have him as this is a big money game for him, not just in terms of the Heisman but also in dollars. Big time players tend to step up in big-time games and you don’t have him on your team if you didn’t believe he was this type of player.
Jacquizz Rodgers – Oregon State: Love my friends is a strong feeling that us fantasy owners must not fight. Head coach Mike Riley is in love with Rodgers which makes him someone to pickup if available and certainly worthy of starting for you against the right teams, i.e. Hawaii this week.
Ryan McCants – Oregon State: Apparently Coach Riley didn’t read any of the off-season hype around McCants because I don’t think he even knows his name. Please drop McCants in all but the deepest of leagues.
Jeremiah Johnson – Oregon: Johnson injured his shoulder and he says he could have returned. However, he was held out for precautionary reasons in the blow out against Utah State. While I suspect he suits up, look for the Ducks to split the carries more than normal.
LaGarrette Blount – Oregon: In a jam at the running back position, Blount is a decent option this week against Purdue in deeper leagues.
Luke Lippincott – Nevada: Tore his ACL and lost for the season. OK to drop.
Vai Taua – Nevada: It is purely speculation to how the carries will be divided between Taua and Brandon Fragger but my bet is that Taua will be the better fantasy back. If you have a roster spot that is being wasted, feel free to gamble by picking up Taua this week before everyone else.
Duane Bennett – Minnesota: Knee injury, lost for the season. Ok to drop.
Shady Salamon – Minnesota: Is expected to move into the starting spot for the Gophers following the injury to Bennett. While he will still shares some carries, he makes for an excellent free agent pick up who could easily end up starting some games for you.
Frank Goodin – La Monroe: Goodin had some mystery surgery done mid-week on his knee with very limited information being released. He didn’t play last week and I think it is best to leave him on the bench for now.
Rodney Lovett – La Monroe: Need to find a starter for this week on the free agent scrap heap, look no further than Lovett. He got 17 carries against Arkansas last week and should see 20+ carries this week against Alabama A&M.
Antone Smith – FSU: Smith might have been one of the more highly touted running backs coming out of high school but at this point he is just a name you recognize. It is time to cut him.
Aaron Brown – TCU: Brown might be the most talented Hornfrog back since LaDainian Tomlinson but that does little for you if he doesn’t get the ball. Unless your league just has a huge roster limit, it is time to cut Brown loose as he is ‘dead’ to the coaching staff currently.
Nic Grigsby – Arizona: Grigsby might not be the flashy back that makes the highlight reel but is the perfect #2/3-type back on your fantasy team. The Wildcats offense will put up plenty of points and Grigsby will have plenty of opportunities to score. Start him with confidence against most teams.
