Power I: Under the Weather

By Drew Smith | October 2, 2008

mike-goodson Power I: Under the WeatherNot sure if it’s the losing record of my alma mater UCF or all this political hoopla, but I’m feeling a little down and out this week.  Hopefully I can shake off this bug sooner than later.  Here are a few RB insights heading into the weekend:

Mike Goodson , Texas A&M :  Goodson had 11 rushes for a shocking 20 yards against an Army defense that is one of the worst against the run in the nation.  Goodson is on pace for 660 yards and 6TDs with over half his stats coming in the first game with only 29 carries for 96 yards with zero TDs over the last 3 games.

There was a lot of talk before the season about how new head coach Mike Sherman was going to build his offense around Goodson but now it looks like he will use this season to the evaluate talent on the team.  It is now safe to cut Goodson in most leagues.

Some additions for your team:

trans Power I: Under the Weather Antone Smith, Florida State :  There has been a Smith sighting as he exploded for 25-154-3 against a decent Colorado team.  Heading into this game Smith only had 158  rushing yards combined in his three previous games event though one could argue that the first games where just scrimmages.  Sure it is only one game but when someone as talented as Smith finally shows some life then it is time to take notice and is someone that is worth a speculative free agent pick up if you have some dead weight on your team.

LaMark Brown, Kansas State :  Most people are saying ‘who is this LaMark Brown running back who went for 29-137-1 against UL-Lafayette this past week?’  Brown was very highly recruited coming out of high school who had all the physical attributes to be a dominating  wide receiver as he is 6-3 225lbs with blazing speed and great leaping ability.  However there was a problem and that is his hands as Brown has not been able to avoid the drops.  With the off-season feel good story of Keithen Valentine averaging less than 4.0 yards a carry coach Prince decided to try the athletic Brown at running back last week and after a successful transition has named Brown the starter going forward.  We are talking about a big, fast and athletic player who is now expected to get 20+ touches a game which means I want you to take a flyer on him if you are sitting on a dud on your team.

Marlon Lucky, Nebraska :  It is time for most owners to cut bait and move on as Lucky is just not getting enough touches in a game to justify starting.  He is on pace for 558 yards rushing and 282 yards receiving and I don’t see any signs that this will improve unless the Cornhuskers are hit with some injuries.

Josh Adams, Wake Forest :  No more excuses.  No need to display further patience.  Adams is averaging 2.7 ypc per game and rushed 11 times for 5 yards against one of the worse defenses in Div 1A in Navy this past week.  Enough said, cut in all non-keeper leagues.

Curtis Steele, Memphis :  Steele has now gotten 20+ carries in back-to-back games an eclipsed the 200 yard mark last week against what is considered one of the better mid-major defenses in Arkansas State .  Steele is a JUCO and has burst onto the scene in the last few weeks and while he gives up goal-line carries to Charlie Jones is someone worth picking up as Memphis moves into the defense-challenged CUSA part of the schedule.
