October 8th, 2009 by Drew Smith

  1. Ryan Williams VaTech vs. Boston College
  2. Jahvid Best Cal vs. Idle
  3. Dion Lewis Pitt vs UConn
  4. Jacquizz Rodgers Oreg St vs. Stanford (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI)
  5. Darius Marshall Marsh at Tulane
  6. Ryan Matthews Fres at Haw
  7. Toby Gerhart Stanford at Oregon St

PERMA – STAT: Noel Devine from WVU has already scored 6 times which puts him on pace to score 18 TDs. Not too bad for a player who only scored 4 TDs in all of 2008.

Fave plays for Week Four

  • Anthony Dixon, Houston at Miss St – Dixon now has back-to-back 100+ yard games against two very strong defenses in LSU and GT.  This week he gets to face off on a Houston team that was exposed by a strong running team.  I expect Miss St to use what UTEP did as a blueprint and run the ball down their throats.  Dixon should be in for a huge game.
  • Bernard Pierce, Ball St vs. Temple – Pierce was my super-sleeper last week and he didn’t disappoint with 180 yards and 2 TDs against EMU.  This week he gets to face a Ball St team that struggled to stop anyone on defense.  If you are able to snag him off waivers then this is another strong matchup for the true frosh.
  • Andre Anderson, Marshall vs. Tulane – Anderson had a disappointing game against Army as he ran for 70 and only scored once.  If he wants to make a push for elite fantasy player then he will need to this week against a decent CUSA defense in Marshall.  I have faith in Anderson and expect him to carry his team as they look to get off to a quick start in their first conference game.
  • Dimitri Nance, Ariz St vs. Wash St – Nance goes from the watch list last week to one of my favorite starts this week.  This had little to do with his game last week as he only mustered 48yards and a score and more to do with the Wash St defense.  Nance should see 20+ touches and score a few touchdowns, making him a great start this week.
  • Donald Buckram, UTEP vs. Memphis – There is little guarantee that  Coach Price will feed the rock to Buckram this week because we‘ve burned so many times due to his maddening play calling over the years.  With that said, there isn’t a better matchup this week than Buckham against a Memphis team which ranks 109th in yards/game and just game up 200+ to Brynn Harvey of UCF last week.

  • Toney Baker, Duke at NC St – Baker doesn’t get enough carries to be a consistent stud every week but he gets the goal-line carries and should be good for 2 scores this week against a Duke.
  • Ralph Bolden, Purdue at Minn – Bolden saw his production come crashing down in the 2nd game of the week.  This week’s matchup against Minnesota is Bolden’s fantasy make or break game. Another disappointing game here will kill any confidence to start him going forward.  The Gophers run defense is 94th giving up 174 ypg and got steamed-rolled last week against John Clay.

Super sleeper

Glenn Winston, Mich St at Illinois – Winston should be available in most leagues as he only has 46 carries for 140yards and 1 TD on the season.  However, for teams that are desperate for a spot starter this week, then here is a player who carried the ball 24 times last week against Michigan.  The overall stats were nothing to write home about with 47yards and 1 TD- but the important thing to note is that down the stretch it was Winston they chose to give the ball to and he rewarded them with a beautiful 15yard walk-off TD run.  This week he will face a much softer defense in Illinois who ranks 103rd against the rush making Winston in line for a 100yard and 1 TD type game.  Not bad for a spot starts.

VICIOUS PINE

John Clay, Wis vs. Ohio St – The Badgers get their first real test of the season facing the Buckeyes on the road.  Clay has been running wild against the likes of Michigan St, Minnesota and Fresno St but this game is going to bring him back to earth.  In deeper leagues he is someone you can start if you have no other better options since he still might punch in a TD; but I wouldn’t expect him to carry your team this week.  If he does, then Clay moves up to the Perm-Starter status.

LaMichael James at UCLA – James hurt his ankle last week and listed as probable for the game at UCLA.  Also QB Jeremiah Masoli hurt his knee and is questionable for the game, which is going to make scoring points difficult on an under-rated UCLA defense.  James has done a nice job filling in for LaGarrette Blount. However, playing on the road with a bum ankle coupled with a QB with a bum knee- against a decent defense- is something that should be avoided.

Add to watch list

From Last Week…

Lamon Muldrow, San Jose

 Dmitri Nance, Arizona St

Alfred Morris, FAU

Alvester Alexander, Wyoming – Alexander is a true freshman who the new coaching staff pegged to be their running back of the future.  The future appears to be now as Alexander has seen his rushing attempts increase each week with a 17 carry 50 yards and 3 TDs last week.  If Alexander can have another week of 17+ touches then he could be worth grabbing.

Charles Scott, LSU – A little weird to have a player drafted in the first few rounds in the watch section- but when you are as ineffective as Scott has been, you find yourself in the free agent bin in many leagues.  However, with a 19 carry 95 yards and 2 TD game against Georgia last week, perhaps the LSU coaching staff is going to start using him again.  This week against Florida is a tough matchup, but if he can run strong and help LSU keep it close, it could get him back on track.

Mikell Simpson, Virginia – Simpson has been banged up for most of the season and contributed to the Cavs early struggles.  However, this past week- after two weeks to get completely healthy- Simpson looked good as he ran for 100 yards and a touchdown against a very stingy North Carolina team.  Watch to see if Simpson can put together back-to-back games. He can be a nice spot starter.
