QB UPDATE 09/10/08 (And Other Stuff)

September 10th, 2008 by Daniel Freer

From the outhouse to the penthouse…

At least that what it must feel like for Hawaii QB Tyler Graunke (pictured, thanks IconSMI), who went from being excluded from the Warriors 2008 plans, to the starting QB this Saturday when Hawaii travels to Corvallis to play Oregon State.

Last week, Graunke came off the bench to lead the Warriors to a win over FCS Weber State at Aloha Stadium.

The backup to record-setting Warrior QB Colt Brennan may finally get his shot at permanent starter

SOUTH CAROLINA:

The Ol’ Ball Coach Steve Spurrier will go to a two-platoon QB this weekend vs Georgia as the underachieving Chris Smelley and Tommy Beecher will both see action.   Although top Gamecock WR Kenny McKinley is nursing a hamstring, he intends to play.   Read:  Long day for Spurrier this Saturday, beware flying visor.

EAGLEBANK BOWL:

What?  Yes, its one of the new bowl games approved by the NCAA this season, and Navy pretty much has already been picked as one of the teams (if they win six games, they are in).  The Middies are slated to meet the ACC #9 team (now, stop laughing!) in the first EagleBank Bowl, to be played in Washington, DC.   This brings the total of bowl games to 34…which means at least 68 of the 120 Division I FBS programs must win 6 games this season.  Which means that you should have 5 Sun Belt teams going to bowls this season.

TEXAS-UTEP GAME AN ESPN CLASSIC…

Granted, the Longhorns poked the Miners 42-13 late Saturday night in El Paso, but the game will be memorable for some of the classic TV coverage.  Cannot decide which clip was better…the UTEP punter getting “hiked where it hurts”, or the UTEP fan getting the “prostate exam” (trying to keep this “family friendly”) from his grilfriend during a time-out.
