Saturday Morning College Football Breakfast Burrito, Week 2 2009

September 12th, 2009 by Vince Mullins

Wrapping up the week that was along with late updates, all in one nice delicious package…

Toledos Aaron Opelt breaks through the Colorado defense en route to a 61-yard TD in the fourth quarter (thanks, Toledo Blade)

Toledo’s Aaron Opelt breaks through the Colorado defense en route to a 61-yard TD in the fourth quarter (thanks, Toledo Blade)

I am ready to go out on the limb and anoint Toledo and QB Aaron Opelt as this season’s breakout performers after rewatching their 54-38 beatdown of the Buffs.

NASA hopes their rockets work this well.

I know that Colorado is subpar defensively even for the Big 12, but veteran coach and ESPN sideline reporter Bob Davie said that Toledo had the speed edge? That is an amazing statement. I knew Stephen Williams was a top-shelf WR but the addition of unheralded athlete Eric Page mixed with good RBs makes the Rockets a lot of fun to watch. My scan of my six leagues shows the only consistently available free agent is K Alex Steigerwald and RB Morgan Williams who comes off suspension next week – think they are worth a shot now?

WEATHER REPORT

Storms throughout the South according to Weather.com, but the standout item is the expected sub-40 temps in Laramie as the Wyoming Cowboys host Texas. Remember War Memorial is the second-highest-elevated stadium in the country also, this could be a difficult adjustment for the Horns. And Wyoming has shown they can compete with big-time schools including a victory at Tennessee last season. Hmmm…

Recaps of the week’s awesome content and late injury and eligibility updates after the jump.

This Week’s Content

QB – Daniel Freer loves Riley Dodge and suggests to get Bo Levi Mitchell back in your lineup after a tough Week One start.

RB -  Drew Smith saw no trends or news fit to print this week.

WR – I added some new Permastarters and urged caution on some big Week One Performers for the long haul.

Also, lots of late week updates from our conference correspondents so check in their before setting your lineup – see the latest headlines in the right-side channel.

Late injury updates

Will Carroll Triage Time updates the big name players. Triage Time: Top Picks are a Falling…

DeAndre Brown, SMiss hosts UCF- will play against UCF

Dez Briscoe, Kansas at UTEP – Mangino says no panic at the Briscoe, weekly conference call said he is a go in ElPaso.

Anthony Dixon RB Mississippi State returns in the SEC opener against Auburn in a rematch of the 3-2 victory last year. So does it matter?

Marc Tyler RB USC is out with a sprained toe, so Joe McKnight and Stafon Johnson will have one less guy to split carries with tonight in the big matchup versus Ohio State.

Michigan WR Junior Hemingway is out with an ankle injury for the Notre Dame game after a big Week One game versus Western Michigan.

FLU WATCH

Mark Ingram, Alabama is now listed as probable

Wisconsin had about 15 players down on Monday as they prep for Fresno State visit.

Dexter McCLuster, Ole Miss spent the off week of practices in the hospital, about 22 players were in the hospital with no reports yet about missing games (or worse, thank goodness).

I hate to say this, but the flu story will only get bigger as the season progresses, and there will be no way to predict where it will hit. But as Will Carroll often says in his reviews, the quality of care can vary widely from school to school and I think it is intuitive to think the small schools would be less prepared and equipped to deal with a flu outbreak.

COOL STATS

Who holds the active TD pass game streak? Tim Tebow with 29 (thanks to tWWL).

USC is the all-time leader in consecutive 11 win seasons with 7, and that streak is active.

Nebraska has 297 straight sellouts, the all-time and active streak leader.

Michigan hasn’t been shutout in 311 games going back to 1984, second all-tie to BYU.
