Saturday Morning College Football Breakfast Burrito, Week One 2009

September 5th, 2009 by Vince Mullins

Welcome back to the Saturday morning post that wraps up all of the week’s news and adds toppings like early Saturday news updates and my caffeinated last-second analysis.

mmmm...burrito

mmmm...burrito

First of all, condolences to those of you who procured a couple of Top 5 RBs who are no longer with us – Buffalo’s James Starks (shoulder surgery) and Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount (TKO – suspension).

If only our crystal ball was a little less cloudy, we would have steered you clear. Luckily, I have neither on any of my 5 teams because of the Bull’s QB questions and the Oregon offensive-line rebuilding. One of my favorite quotes about luck from Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey: “Luck is the residue of good design.”

The first two weeks of the season always pose a threat in fantasy prognostication, but I have been doing it for awhile now and am willing to stick my neck out. After the jump, some injury updates and fresh news.

Southern Mississippi stars are less than 100%. Alcorn State on the other side so likely both rest up for next week. RB Damion Fletcher’s hamstring bugs him again, and WR DeAndre Brown was only recently cleared for contact after breaking his leg in the bowl game last season. Kim Shugart of AL.com stayed up late for the update.

Ryan Williams to start at Rb for Virginia Tech, but carries will split with David Wilson

The top of the TE depth chart struggles with injuries. Oklahoma Jermaine Gresham out for at least a week with knee cartilage issues, he is being evaluated week-to-week. Arizona Rob Gronkowski has yet to practice in the summer with a back injury and likely is out. AZ Central goes right up to the edge but won’t say out, but ESPN Ted Miller said Gronk was out a couple days ago.

Texas Tech taking on North Dakota, early lead for inside slot was Tramain Swindall but his practices have disappointed. Dude won’t even dress out! Check out likely free agents WR Adam James and Cornelious Douglas for the H (left-slot)

BYU Harvey Unga tweaked a hammy this week ahead of the Oklahoma matchup but is listed probable. He has had a rough summer vacation, having beated swine flu also. Few are looking ahead to some football as much as Unga.

Our friends at http://www.collegeinjuryreport.com/ point to Cal RB Jahvid Best struggling with the same left big toe bone bruise on which he had surgery in the offseason. My early Google News search points to nothing but Best ‘s technicolor yawn against Maryland last season. You likely have him as your RB1 this week, so keep on top of the San Jose Mercury for updates.

Miss. St. Anthony Dixon will dress for the opener, but no one will confirm he is playing after the DUI in the offseason. Best to sit him.

Enjoy the tailgating! Or the pizza at home. Expect me to be Twittering for fun during most of the Oklahoma State – Georgia battle of the Titans.
