Since 2004, the Atlantic Coast Conference lags all others in offensive production – but there are some potentially strong individual fantasy performers in 2010. Maybe even Heisman Trophy hopefuls in Jacory Harris and Christian Ponder?

Look, I don’t care: this is the Peach Bowl. This is not the Chik-Fil-A Bowl, although they do make one heck of a sandwich. This is one of the comparatively few bowls out there that actually has some kind of history, and if it’s good enough for the Rose Bowl to stubbornly cling to an outdated tradition and be mocked roundly, well, it’s pretty easy for me to do the same.
This year’s incarnation pairs a couple of teams who are strikingly similar; both rely on power running games and excellent defensive play (typified in part by a safety operating up in run support a large percentage of the time). The difference lies in – go figure, knowing the teams – special teams: Virginia Tech has them, while Tennessee hasn’t had them in a while, up to and including this season. Pitt will begin the struggles for the ACC in this year’s bowl series. They play a UNC team that struggled all year to find their offense in Chapel Hill, which is only a couple miles from UNC’s campus, in the Meineke Car Care Bowl the day after Christmas. This will be the second consecutive trip to this bowl game for UNC, but they hope they will fare better this year.

Anyone who saw the season-opening game between South Carolina and North Carolina State would have never thought a Wolfpack player would be named the top fantasy player in the ACC.
Obviously, one game does not a season make….and NC State QB RussellWilson got the Wolfpack offense firing quite well as the season progressed….enough for Wilson (photo, thanks CollegeFootballFanatics) to be named our 2009 Fantasy College Blitz – ACC Fantasy Player of the Year.
Wilson, a sophomore from Richmond, VA (Collegiate HS), threw for nearly 2800 yards and 27 TDs for the Wolfpack…and rushed for nearly 300 yards and 4 rushing TDs (all stats quoted are through November 21st games). In 2008, Wilson, as a freshman, was on the ACC-All Fantasy team as the top fantasy QB in the conference.
With several ACC teams on a bye week this past weekend, the stats were more limited than usual. In addition to that, most ACC teams were facing conference games which provided for some interesting outcomes. For the most part, I think the defenses held their own and forced some teams to abandon the run and also hold some high-powered passing games in check. With those caveats, I now provide the helmet stickers. Read the rest of this entry →
