Big 12 Roundup: The Quick and Dirty

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Baylor @ Texas A&M:  Expect lots of offense and high scores here, resulting in a victory for A&M. Robert Griffin, Kendall Wright, and Terrance Ganaway should start. So should basically the entire Aggie offense.  Ryan Tannehill, Christine Michael, Cyrus Gray, Jeff Fuller, Ryan Swope could ALL have big games against a soft defense.

Iowa State @ Missouri:  ISU is bad. Missouri has no consistent performers. Start James Franklin if you don’t have better options, as he tends to pick up a few dozen yards plus a rushing TD each week to pad the passing stats. Henry Josey should be good for 100 yards and a TD.

Oklahoma State @ Texas: Texas showed us that they’re not ready for the big boys yet in a blowout loss to Oklahoma. OSU has an offense about on par with the Sooners, but their defense is much worse. This should be a high scoring but comfortable win for the Cowboys. That means Brandon Weeden, Joseph Randle, Justin Blackmon, and Josh Cooper will all have big games. Hubert Aniyam is worth considering as well. For Texas, these QBs are struggling, but Malcolm Brown should get a lot of carries and Fozzy Whittaker has been scoring from distance.

Kansas State @ Texas Tech:  I remain bearish on the Wildcats and I’ve been wrong several weeks running. Screw it – this is the week they lose. But QB Collin Klein has been scoring a lot of TDs on the ground, and especially if your league gives more points for those than passing TDs, he’s worth playing. Nobody else is really worth playing… unless you don’t have another RB who can top 100 yards, in which case John Hubert is a decent pick. The Red Raiders have looked good in both phases of offense. Seth Doege, Eric Stephens, Darrin Moore, and Eric Ward (a little less, but he’s a consistent red zone target) are great starts.

Oklahoma @ Kansas:  Your conference blowout of the week. Start Landry Jones, Ryan Broyles, Kenny Stills, and Dominique Whaley. Jaz Reynolds has also been putting up good numbers in recent weeks and is worth looking at.

Big 12 Roundup: Red River Shootout!

QB Landry Jones is a sure thing. (Icon SMI)

Oklahoma vs Texas

The Red River Shootout has been decided by 10 points or less for the last four seasons, and I expect it to be close again despite the strength of Oklahoma on both sides of the ball. Oklahoma hasn’t run the ball well against Texas in most of these games, and I don’t expect a lot of production out of Texas’ newly patched offense in general here. The only players who should be sure starts here are Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12 Roundup: Tribute to the Old SWC

Tannehill graduates this year but has to face a SEC defense before he goes. (Icon SMI)

Texas A&M at Arkansas

A matchup of two similar top 25 teams, this one looks like it could be another shootout for A&M. Arkansas hasn’t looked great against the run, and Ryan Tannehill should be able to pass the ball with success against a secondary that’s pretty average by SEC standards. At the end of the day, though, Arkansas seems like a slightly better version of the Aggies, and their offense should be a bit much for the TAMU defense to handle. Ryan Swope has been the early season target and is probably a good start, Fuller and Tannehill as well. Cyrus Gray’s afternoon could go either way; start him if you think the Aggies are going to win this — last week they went away from the run when the Cowboys took the lead. Big 12 Roundup: BB and AB (Before and After Beebe)

Iowa St. now has someone fantasy football relevant...WR Darius Reynolds (Icon SMI)

Week 3 Review

In our Friday night game, Iowa State won a back-and-forth contest against Connecticut – a sloppy affair in which each team turned the ball over three times. WR Darius Reynolds was the diamond in this rough game for fantasy stats – 128 yards and 2 TDs.

Kansas opened Saturday’s games by getting demolished by Georgia Tech, 66-24. The Jayhawks allowed over 600 yards rushing and simply could not keep this game competitive in the third quarter. You were best off not playing any KU players last week. Read the rest of this entry →
