B1G Review: Wisky scores 60, and two big upsets

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

What should have been a bland boring week of the favorites beating up the underdogs turned out to be upset weekend.  The Legends division now has one leader with losses by Michigan and Nebraska.  The Buckeyes and the Gophers seem to have found their offense and Wisconsin looks like they are back on track.

The next few weeks should be exciting as the race to Indy takes shape.  Will we see Penn State and Michigan State in the first Big Ten title game?  Or will Michigan State stumble now that they are in first place again to create a tie in the Legends division?  Wisconsin and Penn State meet on November 26 in Madison.  Before we look too far ahead though here is a recap of this weekends action.

B1G Preview: Scary match ups for Halloween

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Will there be any surprises in the Big Ten this Halloween?  Freaky things happen on Halloween weekend.

All twelve teams face off in conference play and we have another top 25 match up in addition to a trophy game.  Six teams are now bowl eligible and Iowa will look to become the seventh team this week.  Here is a preview of this weeks action as we close out October and prepare to enter the home stretch for the Big Ten title run.

Wisconsin at Ohio State

Wisconsin needs redemption.  They also need to be able to beat the Spartans when it matters but that is another story.  The Buckeyes are just playing the role of spoiler now.  Their season dreams have been crushed and the off field drama have taken a deep toll.  This game looks like it should be all Badgers on paper.  Buckeyes don’t care about paper.  They care about what happens in Columbus.  With that said, I will go ahead and tell you this is the Halloween surprise game.  Freaky things happen on Halloween weekend and I just think Wisconsin falls apart after last weeks loss.  Ohio State will be eager to get a quality win and will find a way to sneak by Badgers.  Looks for solid performances from the starters like Russell Wilson, Montee Ball and Nick Toon.  The Buckeyes have Dan Herron back though and an offense that is eager to rip up a ranked opponent.
Prediction:  Wisconsin 23 Ohio State 24

B1G recap: Spartans twist for the win, Illinois chokes in Week 8

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Week 8 craziness shakes up the Big Ten standings and leaves Wisconsin singing the Spartan blues once again.  Illinois gets shut out for three quarters by Purdue and ends up losing to the Boilermakers.  If you haven’t noticed, Nebraska and Penn State are both still in contention to win their divisions – Penn State is 4-0 in conference play!  A lot happened this week so here is a recap on some of the top games and performers.

Wisconsin 31 Michigan State 37
Early on this game looked like it was going to be all Wisconsin and it wasn’t going to be pretty  for the Spartans.  At the end of the first quarter the Badgers led 14-0.  Just one problem, when you play the Spartans you have to play all four quarters to beat them and this one would go right down to the last minute.  The Badgers did not score in the second quarter and at the half it was Michigan State 23-Wisconsin 14.  Something was stirring in East Lansing.  Could it possibly be another Spartan victory?
Fast forward to the fourth quarter and the final play.  Game tied 31-31 when Kirk Cousins drops back to heave the Hail Mary toward the end zone.  The ball gets batted down out of the end zone, no wait, Spartans have it at the one yard line and then the lean.  Did Keith Nichol make it?  Did the ball cross the plain of the goal line or not?  This one will be debated at bars in Wisconsin and Michigan for years.  Instant replay makes the call and we have a Spartan victory.  Oh my.

Big 10-4: B1G Recap, Wisconsin strong like honey badgers

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

The Big Ten now has five teams in the top 25., with three.  And how about some impressive performances?

Illinois WR A J Jenkins

While thanking fans, we welcome AJ Jenkins to the realm of elite college football wide receivers (Icon SMI

Illinois WR A.J. Jenkins (right) had a career day with 268 receiving yards and three touchdowns while helping his team win the Land of Lincoln trophy.

What the heck was up with Vincent Smith and his trifecta?  He rushed for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and then completed a pass for a touchdown.  Take not Jersey Shore punks, that is a “situation” worth looking at and talking about around the water cooler.

Here is a recap of the past weeks action, starting with Wisconsin’s destruction of Nebraska. Read the rest of this entry →
