Hacking: 2010 Fantasy Defense Rankings

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Starting with Phil Steele’s 2010 projected defense rankings, but I ranked team rush D and team pass D separately, then used my distance theorem to come up with our first fantasy focused total defense ranking.

UCF pops Cane

Can UCF defense help knock off NC State and Kansas State in 2010? We feel confident the Knights can help your fantasy season. (Icon SMI)

I then overlaid total rank of opponent OLs to be faced during the season, which led to some big surprises for your draft prep – several of the top projected Ds also face the nation’s worst OLs to amplify their badassitude.

Teams like Iowa (10), North Carolina (1, pre-sanctions?), Miami (FL) (4), Alabama (8), and Florida (6) are sure to be among the 1st Ds off the board on draft day, but may end up producing similar numbers to those 2nd-tier defenses with easier schedules like Southern Miss (25), UCF (40) or surprising Kent State (46) when it’s all said and done.

Below are the rankings, then the attachment illustrates the full power of this Death Star with conference, division, AQ status (to help you sort if playing AQ only) and all the individual variables discussed above. I bolded the Top 12 in each category (Top 10%) and italicized the bottom 10%.

00732247_BYU_v_UCLAIt is safe to say, that, you can add another name to the long list of stellar QBs to come from Brigham Young University.

Joining such Cougar QB greats like Gifford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, Steve Sarkisian, John Beck, et al…is current BYU signal-caller Max Hall, our 2009 Fantasy College Blitz – Mountain West Conference Fantasy Player of the Year.

Hall, senior from Mesa, AZ (Mountain View HS), repeats as our FCB – MWC Fantasy Player of the Year (2008 winner)…throwing for over 3200 yards and 28 TDs, and rushing for 2 more TDs (stats quoted through November 21st games).

BLITZindex: Cornhuskers still best defense, but with company

Monday, November 16th, 2009

The Fantasy College Blitz BLITZindex ™ is an equal weighted measure of national ranks in three team defense categories – yards per play allowed (YPP), Yard per point allowed (YPPt), and points per game allowed (PPG). Yards per game allowed is included in the study for comparison only – not the rankings.

Nebraska maintains its top spot in the nation after slowing down a very good Kansas offense, now wonder that their most pivotal player DT Ndamukuong Suh receives the rare Heisman Trophy hype for a defensive player. I don’t see the Blackshirts allowing many points at all the rest of the way with Kansas State (no sleepwalking through this game for the B12 North) and Colorado (Dan Hawkins may be coaching intramurals by then).

The two teams atop the BCS now share top billing among the best in class rankings – the Florida Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide now have another way to lock in the anticipated SEC Championship Game (de facto National Championship Game?) matchup. Mark your calendar for December 5.

One more thing – if you followed me a-Twittering this weekend you no doubt sensed two themes – (1) how the heck did Houston lose to UCF and (2) we are seeing the end of an era for Southern Cal Trojans as USC lost to Stanford again. They plummet again down to 29 this week.

After the jump, the numerical college football defense rankings as you prepare your matchups for the fantasy playoffs.

BLITZindex College Football Defense Rankings, Nov 8

Monday, November 9th, 2009

The BLITZindex is an equal weighted measure of national ranks in three team defense categories – yards per play allowed (YPP), Yard per point allowed (YPPt), and points per game allowed (PPG). Yards per game allowed is included in the study for comparison only but not the rankings.

With the throttling beatdown of the Oklahoma Sooners and with 68% of precincts reporting, Fantasy College Blitz is comfortable projecting that the Nebraska Cornhusker Blackshirts Defense has won the race again to be the top defense in the land. They are Back in Black.

The Pelini Brothers succeed in resurrecting the legendary Nebraska defense to its proper place atop the country – Top five rankings in all the categories illustrate just how ineffective the Sun Belt and Big 12 offenses have been in 2009 when facing the Huskers.

Other notes of interest:

  • Texas has a huge lead in yards per play allowed with just 3.53 – a full 0.35 yards better than #2 Alabama and even the 7th ranked TCU allows 4 ypp. Nation-worst EMU allows twice that! Kudos to Will Muschamp for adding the missing link to the Longhorns evolution towards the national championship.
  • Army is in the top decile in yds/gm allowed at just over 290 (not part of the index) and 33rd in ypp, showing that the defense is quite stout. The offense and special teams are not doing their part though as the Black Knights are 60th in ppg and even worse at 110th in yds/pt. All that equals out to the 69th overall defense. I need to research further but it is likely that Army opponents have the best starting field position in the history of football given those divergences.
  • Western Kentucky may have fired the wrong coach today because the defense almost had the bizarro-perfect score of 120 in all the digits – the Hilltoppers are the worst in the country in pts allowed (44.56) and yds/play allowed (7.18). Seven teams are worse than them in yards per point allowed (11.53). Ha, every two plays equals a point – can it get much worse?

Numerical ranks after the jump, alphabetical with all stats on the .pdf to help you with your playoff matchups.
