Fantasy impact: Tim Tebow’s injury

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Florida QB Tim Tebow, on the ground after taking a big hit in the third quarter against Kentucky, which forced him out of the game.

Florida QB Tim Tebow, on the ground after taking a big hit in Q3 vs. Kentucky.

Unless you live under a rock, you know that Florida QB Tim Tebow was knocked out of Florida’s 41-7 victory against Kentucky after a hard shot to the head in the third quarter, and taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Currently it’s unknown how this hit will affect his status for the Gators’ matchup against LSU in two weeks. Nor is it clear how it will affect the battle for the Heisman Trophy.

Triage Time: Top Picks are a Falling…

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Medical SymbolWith the many injuries piling up on the baseball front and the beginning of NFL games, this weeks Triage Time is a bit delayed. Without further commentary, let’s get straight to the damage, starting with the two biggest headlines this week.

QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma – Shoulder

Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner went down with a right shoulder (AC joint) sprain in Oklahoma’s devastating loss to Brigham Young. Expect Bradford to be held out at least until the October 3 game against Miami, but he will definitely be back on the field when the Sooners open their Big 12 season against Baylor. Be aware that with this being his throwing arm, expectations have to be tempered upon his return.

TE Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma – Knee

Gresham has had arthroscopic surgery on his knee and has been declared out for the season by the Sooner’s medical staff. With QB Bradford sidelined for three weeks, the loss of Gresham will put even more pressure on Bradford’s replacement, Landry Jones. This is a major blow to fantasy, considering how many fantasy points Gresham was projected to put above the next best TE.

Injury updates for Week One (and fishing trip eligibility)

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Quick list, culled from numerous sources.  Also, be sure to follow Triage Time for additional injury insights, there is a new one being posted early this week.  Onto the headlines…

Ron Johnson, USC WR – ESPN says out 6-8 weeks with broken collarbone. Elevate David Ausberry on your watch list.

Damion Fletcher and D’Andre Brown, Southern Miss – hamstring pull last week for Fletcher, Brown yet to take a hit although practicing with his healing broken leg. I wonder aloud if either plays in Week One against the Braves of Alcorn State?

Andre Debose, WR Florida – may need surgery for his hamstring (what is it with the hammys on the Gators? Lifting too much weight?) Gators are deeper than the Marianas Trench so no adjustments needed here. Carl Moore, WR Florida – back injuries have kept him out of camp all fall, may be out for the season per the Gainesville Sun. These two injuries (Top 5 recruits out of college and High School respectively) make Deonte Thompson the easy WR1 in Gainesville.

Mackay Jacobsen WR BYU – concussion-like symptoms kept him from practice per Deseret News, so we at FCB are particularly keen to this story since we have him ranked much higher than the other services on the interwebs. As of now he is a go for the opener against Oklahoma, and good luck keeping him out of the game against the Sooners after spending two years away on a mission.

Jewel Hampton, RB Iowa – knee injury has him out for opener, no long term prognosis but thoughts of redshirting. Jeff Brinson is moving up the add lists on U-Sports as his replacement..

Darius Darks, WR Iowa State – hammy issues here have kept DD out of most practices and he may sit the opener. Dare I say this leaves a Darks spot on the depth chart?

OK, now for the fishing trip…

AP reports Alabama’s Mark Ingram and WR Julio Jones eligibility for the opener with Virginia Tech is in question after they took a gift of a fishing trip.Stay tuned.

The Five Injuries You Meet in Football Hell

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Intro by John Huss:

I mentioned earlier that Will Carroll would be joining us to add coverage on NCAA Football injuries.  To kick things off, here are a few words of introduction from Will along with a reprint of a previous article that applies to this wonderful game of football.

Forward by Will Carroll:

When I began doing this, I was following a passion to learn more about baseball.  I knew that the doctors and Athletic Trainers were working hard, but no one paid attention.  Injuries were “part of the game” I was told.  People were happy with vague information and “four to six weeks” coachspeak .  I wasn’t and it’s not just baseball, it’s sports.  While I’m primarily a baseball guy, an injury is an injury.  I played high school football – and managed to get injured a lot.  Concussions?  Been there.  Dislocated fingers?  Been there, screaming.  ACL tear?  No, but I thought I did once.  I have had turf toe and damn, it hurts.

Football is a game of inches, someone said, but the modern game is one of information.  If you’re watching the game, playing the game, coaching the game, or even playing the fantasy game – the person who can do the best job of processing the most information will win.  Teams have doctors and trainers to help keep them healthy, spending millions of dollars to try to bring players back.  Or watching them waste away on a redshirt or the collegiate equivalent of the DL .  It’s not dollars lost in the NCAA, but let’s face it, it is.  I’ll be your medical staff, helping you understand the biggest, most important injuries around the game.

I wrote this piece for the first Pro Football Prospectus a few years back and while it’s focused on the pro game, it holds true for the collegiate game as well.  Hell is the same on scholarships, I guess.
